Witchy Cottage-Builder REKA Launches Into 1.0, Concluding Reka's Story

Emberstorm Entertainment's Slavic folklore builder leaves two years of Early Access behind with new clay walls, a rotation compass and Reka's final chapter.

Emberstorm Entertainment's long-legged, long-awaited cottage has finally stopped wandering. On October 26, the Berlin studio's REKA left Steam Early Access and launched version 1.0, closing out a story that began when the atmospheric witchcraft builder first opened its doors to players in 2024. The update delivers the final chapter of Reka's apprenticeship under the legendary witch Baba Jaga, a fresh set of building materials, and a long list of quality-of-life fixes aimed at players who have spent two years furnishing a house that runs on chicken legs. It is also the first full 1.0 release for Emberstorm, a small team whose entire public output so far has been this one game.

A Chicken-Legged House Gets New Walls

REKA casts players as the title character, an apprentice learning witchcraft while constructing and decorating a mobile cottage styled after the izbushka of Slavic folklore. There is no combat; the loop is foraging, potion-brewing, befriending woodland animals, and expanding a house that can be rebuilt almost without limit. Version 1.0 widens that toolbox considerably, adding four new wood types, spruce, birch, beech and pine, alongside a brand-new clay building set, so a single structure can mix timber framing with daubed clay walls for the first time. Combined with the furniture and decoration sets already in the game, the new palette is meant to let long-time builders rework cottages they have been maintaining since the Early Access launch rather than starting over from scratch.

Construction itself got faster too. Players can now place or remove several building pieces in one action instead of one at a time, a rotation compass and tighter snapping make precise alignment easier, and roof construction is more flexible for the sprawling, asymmetrical designs the community has been posting since Early Access began. Emberstorm also used the update to add side quests, shrines and collectibles scattered through the woodland, giving the exploration half of the game a similar boost to the building half. Those additions sit alongside the existing foraging and potion-brewing loop rather than replacing it, so returning players should recognize the broad shape of a run even as the map fills in with new points of interest.

An Apprenticeship Reaches Its Final Chapter

The bigger change is narrative. Version 1.0 carries Reka's story to its conclusion, with Rhianna Pratchett, the writer behind Rise of the Tomb Raider and Overlord, serving as lead writer on the project since she joined in 2024. Her involvement has been central to how Emberstorm has pitched the game beyond its building mechanics, as a quiet, character-driven fairy tale rather than a pure survival sim. That framing matters for a genre crowded with cozy builders: REKA's pitch has always leaned on its Slavic folklore setting and Baba Jaga's presence as a mentor figure rather than on crafting depth alone, and the 1.0 narrative is built to pay that framing off with an actual ending instead of leaving Reka's training open-ended.

"I've always loved the unusual and the wonderful, so working on the narrative for REKA with Emberstorm and Fireshine has been a fantastic experience," said Rhianna Pratchett, Lead Writer on REKA.

Atmosphere and Quality-of-Life Upgrades

Alongside the story and building additions, 1.0 layers in a round of atmospheric detail: wind now moves through the trees, moths gather around lit lanterns, footprints and water splashes track across wet ground, and Reka's breath shows in cold weather while her clothes visibly dampen in the rain. Emberstorm paired that polish with practical fixes, including adjustable autosave intervals and performance optimization aimed specifically at large builds and crowded villages, areas where the Early Access build was known to slow down. The patch also adds Japanese localization and 21 new Steam achievements that unlock decorative plaques for the player's cottage, a small but visible way to show off a completed run without having to screenshot the whole house.

From a 2024 Early Access Debut to a Finished Fairy Tale

REKA entered Steam Early Access in September 2024 from Emberstorm Entertainment, with Fireshine Games publishing in most territories and Shochiku handling the release in Japan. The studio had previously targeted an August 18 exit from Early Access before pushing the full launch back to late October, a two-month slip the team used to finish Reka's final questline and the new building materials rather than ship the ending early. The studio has periodically supported the Early Access build with free seasonal content updates in the intervening years, a cadence that kept the small community active while the 1.0 story content was still in progress.

Where to Play REKA Now

REKA is available on Steam for Windows only, with no Mac, Linux, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch version announced. The 1.0 launch comes with a 35% discount, bringing the price down from $19.99 to $12.99 through November 7, and the demo that previously ran as a separate Steam listing has now been folded into the main store page. For a studio whose entire output to date is this one game, the full release is as much a statement of survival as it is a finale for Reka's story, and Emberstorm has given no indication yet of what, if anything, comes next. In the meantime, 1.0 is being treated as the definitive version of the game rather than a stepping stone to paid expansions, with the studio framing the update as the completion of Reka's arc rather than the start of a new one.
