Hideo Kojima Casts Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT's Lead at Tokyo Game Show

Hideo Kojima confirmed Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT's lead during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, sharing a poster shot he took himself of his cast.

Hideo Kojima closed out Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on September 17 with the update fans had been waiting on since PHYSINT lost its original publisher: Bill Skarsgård is the game's lead. Kojima made the reveal himself in a surprise "one more thing" segment, confirming a piece of casting news that had been teased for months and giving the action-espionage project its clearest shape yet under a new publisher.

"I'm delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård," Kojima said. "We are both long-time fans of each other's work, and we've decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project."

A poster Kojima shot himself

Alongside the confirmation, Kojima Productions published a new poster built around a photograph Kojima says he took personally during those costume and camera tests, showing Skarsgård next to co-star Charlee Fraser. The studio's official announcement frames it as proof of how far along the production already is, rather than an early concept piece.

Skarsgård, the Swedish actor known for horror and genre work, joins a cast that Kojima Productions first outlined at its own 10th-anniversary event: Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe all remain attached. Kojima has repeatedly called PHYSINT the culmination of his career, describing it as a project meant to redefine action-espionage rather than fit inside an existing genre template. That framing echoes how he talked about Death Stranding and the Metal Gear Solid series in their own early reveals, projects that also leaned on unconventional casting and motion-capture work well before release.

Why the reveal needed a new publisher first

PHYSINT's path to this stage has not been simple. The project was originally set up with Sony, but Kojima has said Sony notified him of its cancellation in mid-June. Xbox stepped in as the new publishing partner after what Kojima has described as roughly three months of searching, a deal that Xbox's own Tokyo Game Show recap frames as an expansion of a relationship that already covers OD, Kojima Productions' other original title with Xbox.

That context is why Thursday's segment carried extra weight. It was the first substantial PHYSINT update since the publisher change became public, and it doubled as a statement that the production has kept moving through the transition rather than stalling. Kojima had already signaled the switch himself in the days before Tokyo Game Show, and Thursday's broadcast was the first time either company put concrete casting details behind that announcement.

What Xbox is getting out of the partnership

Xbox is positioning PHYSINT as more than a games deal. According to the studio's announcement, the collaboration between Kojima Productions and Xbox extends into film and television as well, with the two organizations describing plans to develop stories across mediums rather than treat PHYSINT purely as a single release. Xbox has not published a platform list beyond confirming its own publishing role, and no release window has been attached to the game.

  • Lead role: Bill Skarsgård, confirmed September 17, 2026
  • Also cast: Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, Minami Hamabe
  • Director: Hideo Kojima, Kojima Productions
  • Publisher: Xbox, following Sony's exit from the project in June 2026

What's still unconfirmed

Kojima Productions has not detailed PHYSINT's story, setting or release timing, and Thursday's segment did not include gameplay footage. Anything beyond the cast and publisher confirmed here remains speculation until Kojima Productions or Xbox says otherwise; past comments from Kojima have suggested the game is still years from release, but the studio did not repeat a timeline during this broadcast.

“I'm delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård. We are both long-time fans of each other's work, and we've decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”Hideo Kojima, founder and director, Kojima Productions

For now, the casting confirmation gives PHYSINT its first hard proof point since the Xbox deal was announced, and it sets up whatever Kojima Productions shows next as a continuation of a project that, for a few tense months this summer, looked like it might not have a home at all.
