PlayStation Confirms Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Download Opens November 10
Sony says pre-ordered copies of Grand Theft Auto VI can start downloading on PS5 starting November 10, nine full days before the November 19 launch day.
Sony has put a firm date on the first concrete step toward Grand Theft Auto VI's launch. In a PlayStation Blog post published today, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that PS5 owners who have pre-ordered Rockstar Games' open-world sequel will be able to begin pre-downloading it starting November 10, nine days ahead of the game's November 19 release.
Pre-Download Opens November 10 at Local Midnight
According to the post, pre-download access unlocks "starting at November 10 local midnight" for anyone who has already placed an order through PlayStation Store or a participating retailer. Sony frames the window as a courtesy for players who want the game fully installed and ready to go the moment servers open on launch day, rather than queuing behind millions of other downloads on November 19 itself.
The announcement doubles as Sony's first detailed look at what players actually need to do between now and launch: confirm a PlayStation account is current, lock in a pre-order, and clear enough storage to hold the install.

Clearing 212GB Before the Download Window Opens
That last step is the one most likely to catch people out. Sony's post specifies a minimum of 212GB of free space on PS5 storage, a figure that puts Grand Theft Auto VI among the largest single installs the console has seen. Players on a base PS5 with a mostly full internal drive will likely need to delete other titles or move them to external storage before pre-download day arrives.
Sony's post links out to its own guidance on expanding PS5 storage with compatible M.2 SSDs, a step the company is clearly anticipating plenty of players will need to take given the game's footprint.
What Pre-Ordering Now Gets You
Pre-ordering isn't just about securing a pre-download slot. Sony's post highlights the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition, which it describes as bundling "an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story" on top of the base game. Both the standard and Ultimate editions, along with full pricing, are listed on the game's official PlayStation Store product page.

Rockstar's own Grand Theft Auto VI site carries the same edition breakdown, plus a separate pre-order incentive it calls the Vintage Vice City Pack, giving players a second place to compare what each tier includes before deciding where to buy. Jason and Lucia, the game's two protagonists, remain the throughline connecting every edition's bonus content back to the main story Rockstar first revealed in its original trailer.
Account and Hardware Checklist
The rest of Sony's advice is straightforward but easy to overlook. New PlayStation owners are told to create an account and sign in on-console well before November 10, while returning players should double-check that their sign-in details and payment information are current so a pre-download doesn't stall partway through. Sony also uses the post to point toward accessories it expects players to lean on for launch, including the DualSense Edge controller, the PlayStation Pulse wireless headset and the Pulse Elevate wireless speakers.
None of that advice is unique to this release, but the scale of anticipation around Grand Theft Auto VI makes the basics worth repeating. Rockstar's return to the fictional state of Leonida, its first new entry in the series since 2013, has already driven a wave of pre-orders large enough that Sony is treating account hygiene and storage planning as launch-week priorities rather than afterthoughts.
The Countdown to November 19
Sony's post closes by promising more details "as we get closer to November 19," without specifying what form that will take. Rockstar has not yet confirmed whether Xbox Series X|S owners will see an equivalent pre-download date announced separately, though both versions remain on track for the same day-one release.
For now, November 10 is the date to watch. With a 212GB install on the table and millions of players expected to log in the moment the game unlocks, clearing space and confirming account details early looks less like an optional convenience and more like the only way to avoid losing hours of launch day to a download bar.
