Sony Reveals PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge Wireless Headsets for PS5
Sony detailed its next PS5 audio lineup: a standard PlayStation Pulse headset landing this holiday, and a noise-cancelling Pulse Edge in early 2027.
Sony used a September 15 PlayStation Blog post to introduce the next generation of its PS5 headset lineup, and this time there are two models instead of one. The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset replaces the standard Pulse Elite, while the PlayStation Pulse Edge Wireless Headset becomes the new flagship, adding active noise cancellation and a detachable boom mic on top of the shared planar magnetic driver design.
Both headsets keep the PlayStation Link wireless standard that debuted with Pulse Elite in 2024, but Sony says the drivers themselves have grown, and the audio and comfort updates apply across the whole range rather than being split between a budget and premium tier the way past PS5 headsets have been.
Two headsets, one driver philosophy
According to the PlayStation Blog announcement, both the Pulse and Pulse Edge use custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers, a technology Sony first brought to console gaming with Pulse Elite. Planar drivers use a thin diaphragm moving inside a magnetic field rather than a traditional dynamic speaker cone, which Sony says gives players sharper directional cues, like footsteps or a reload, in competitive shooters. The new drivers are physically larger than the ones in Pulse Elite, which Sony says adds fuller, deeper bass without losing that separation.
Sony Interactive Entertainment's Joe Bentley framed the refresh as a response to how players used the first planar-driver headset.
What's new on the standard Pulse headset

- Simultaneous Bluetooth connection for phones or tablets alongside the PlayStation Link connection

- Available in White and Midnight Black
PlayStation Link also lets the headset switch between a PS5 console, the PlayStation Portal remote player, PC and Mac without repairing, which was one of the more requested features after Pulse Elite launched.
Pulse Edge adds noise cancellation and a detachable mic
The Pulse Edge Wireless Headset carries the same driver design but with double the magnet volume per driver, eight magnets instead of four, for what Sony describes as richer bass while keeping the same clarity. It is the more clearly premium of the two: Pulse Edge adds active noise cancellation, a detachable boom mic with a hidden-mic option when the boom is removed, a carrying case, an audio and microphone jack for wired use, and a built-in control for balancing game audio against chat volume on PS5.
Sony's own Pulse Edge product page lists it as the headset built for players who want a single set of cans that works as well for travel and calls as it does for ranked matches, which lines up with the carrying case and detachable mic Sony is emphasizing.

Release windows, and what Sony still hasn't said
Sony confirmed that the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset launches in select markets starting this holiday season, while the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset follows in early 2027. Neither pricing nor a specific pre-order date has been announced; Sony's blog post says only that more launch details, including pre-order timing, launch dates and price, are coming later. That is a notable gap given Pulse Elite launched at $149.99 and the Pulse Explore earbuds at $199.99 back in 2024, so buyers comparing against those prices should treat any number they see elsewhere as a rumour until Sony confirms one directly.
Both models will be sold through Sony's own PlayStation Direct storefront alongside the existing Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore, and the company has published a full spec comparison between the standard Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets on its Pulse Wireless Headset page for anyone deciding between the two ahead of launch.
Why it matters
Pulse Elite was Sony's first real push into premium PS5 audio hardware, and splitting its successor into a standard and Edge tier suggests the company sees enough demand to justify two separate price points rather than one headset with optional add-ons. With Pulse Wireless landing this holiday and Pulse Edge waiting until early 2027, Sony has given itself a staggered rollout to gather feedback on the cheaper model before its flagship reaches shelves.
