Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Opens Campaign Early Access on October 16

Infinity Ward lets pre-order players start Modern Warfare 4's Campaign a week early on October 16, ahead of its October 23 launch with DMZ and Kill Block.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is now three weeks from launch, and Infinity Ward has used its Forward Operating Blog to lock in the last of the dates players need before they ship out to Korea. Pre-order customers who buy the game digitally get into the Campaign a full week early, on October 16, ahead of the worldwide release on all platforms on October 23.

That early window matters more than usual this cycle. Modern Warfare 4 is the first mainline entry built for Nintendo Switch 2 alongside Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, and Infinity Ward has spent the summer walking back the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ in separate reveals rather than one showcase. With Early Access now dated and the open beta long finished, the picture of what players are actually buying on October 23 is close to complete.

A New Squad on the Korean Peninsula

The Campaign picks up after Modern Warfare III, with Captain Price continuing an off-book hunt for Vladimir Makarov while a separate, parallel story follows a South Korean infantry squad caught in a full-scale North Korean invasion. According to Xbox Wire's interview with the development team, the new squad includes conscripts Park, Jay, Cho and Moon, plus two American Marines, West and Dunn, embedded alongside them as the front line collapses through Korea, Paris, New York and Mumbai.

Infinity Ward has said the new characters are built to hold their own against franchise mainstays like Price and Soap by giving players something to actually do alongside them in combat, not just dialogue to listen to. The studio has also framed the culture clash between the conscripted Korean squad and their embedded American allies as one of the Campaign's central dynamics.

Kill Block Headlines the Multiplayer Overhaul

Multiplayer launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, the new Kill Block mode, and Ground War: Combat Outpost for large-scale infantry-and-vehicle fights. Infinity Ward's August Multiplayer Trailer below shows off the new Apex Attachment system, which lets players unlock secondary weapon variants through play rather than a separate currency, alongside Killstreaks and the returning Gunfight format.

Kill Block in particular was shaped by community testing: Infinity Ward brought an alpha build to Fanatics Fest in August and folded player reactions into the final design before the open beta ran across two weekends at the end of that month.

DMZ Returns to the Hajin Exclusion Zone

The extraction mode DMZ is back after sitting out Modern Warfare III, rebuilt around a new setting called Hajin, a sprawling Exclusion Zone shaped by the aftermath of the Campaign's invasion. Infinity Ward's DMZ deep dive on the Call of Duty blog describes it as a living combat world combining narrative Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and player-driven encounters, with progression that carries over between deployments.

The studio has said the redesign draws directly on feedback from the original 2022 DMZ beta, emphasizing full missions and free-roam exploration over the loot-and-extract loop alone. DMZ launches alongside the base game on October 23 at no extra cost.

What the Beta Already Settled

Because Infinity Ward ran both an Early Access and an open beta weekend in late August, most of Modern Warfare 4's core systems are already public knowledge rather than launch-day surprises. The beta exposed 22 weapons across nine classes, each with unlockable Apex Attachments on top of the standard Gunsmith tree, and let players test five of the twelve launch maps, including Transit 213 and Rooftops, across Core 6v6 modes, Kill Block and a Warzone Resurgence match on the map Zodiac.

That public testing window is also why so little of the current discussion is speculative. Player-level progression, Beta Rewards and the weapon unlock pacing all carried over into retail builds with only minor tuning, according to Infinity Ward's own beta recap posts, so the open questions left heading into October are less about whether the core shooting feels right and more about how the full twelve-map rotation and the finished Campaign hold together.

Editions, Pre-order Bonuses and Platforms

Modern Warfare 4 ships in Standard and Vault editions, the latter bundling Operator and weapon blueprint packs plus a season of BlackCell. Digital pre-order buyers also get Campaign Early Access and the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, and Infinity Ward added a second cosmetic bonus, the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint, in early September. The full release is listed on Steam for PC alongside Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, developed natively for Switch 2 by Infinity Ward in partnership with Digital Legends.

With the open beta, Fanatics Fest hands-on sessions and the Campaign Early Access window all behind or immediately ahead of it, Modern Warfare 4 is entering its final stretch with little left to reveal before October 23 beyond the finished Campaign itself.
