Square Enix closed the final slot of its September 3 State of Play with the one thing every Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy fan had been waiting years to hear: an actual date. Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, the first time a mainline entry in the trilogy has arrived on every platform simultaneously.

A Release Date Six Years in the Making

The broadcast closed with an extended, roughly ten-minute look at Revelation, the concluding chapter that picks up directly after 2024's Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi appeared on camera to introduce the footage himself, and the segment doubled as confirmation that this is the final full entry in the remake project before two story expansions arrive afterward: one centered on Sephiroth, the other on Vincent Valentine and the Turks. Square Enix detailed the whole announcement on the PlayStation Blog, and pre-orders for the standard, Premium and Premium Plus editions opened the same day.

Wutai Gets the Spotlight It Was Denied in Rebirth

The biggest surprise in the footage was how much room Revelation gives to Wutai, Yuffie's home turf, which Rebirth had only gestured at. The new build renders it as a dense, vertical take on feudal Japan, and Yuffie's grapple gun turns the district's rooftops into a traversal playground rather than a backdrop. Rocket Town also returns as a fully explorable region for the first time since the original 1997 release, alongside the Great Glacier and new submarine sequences that extend the party's reach across the planet's oceans.

None of this is guesswork pieced together from leaks — every location named here was shown running in real time during the broadcast, and Square Enix's own recap on its official Revelation site confirms Wutai and Rocket Town by name as new explorable areas.

Cid, Vincent and the New FITS Job System

Combat is changing too. Revelation introduces the FITS system, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear, which lets any playable character re-equip into one of four specialized roles: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. Each FITS carries its own moveset and visibly changes how the character looks and fights, and the showcase specifically highlighted Cid Highwind wearing the Knight suit and Vincent Valentine wearing the Summoner, a deliberate spotlight on two party members who had limited screen time in Remake and Rebirth.

Alongside the job change, players get a new grappling gun for scaling terrain, instant character switching during exploration rather than only in battle, and the ability to choose which party member handles specific side quests, with the choice affecting how those scenes play out.

The Highwind, Queen's Blood and a Chocobo Named Piko

Traversal gets the biggest structural change of the three games: the Highwind airship is now fully player-controlled, and the party can parachute down from it directly into the open world instead of triggering a cutscene landing. A chocobo companion named Piko joins as both a mount and a combat ally that grows stronger as the story advances. The card-battling minigame Queen's Blood also returns with a new campaign built around Red XIII, introducing tougher opponents and boards the first two games never used.

What's Confirmed, and What Still Isn't

Square Enix has not detailed a demo, nor said whether Revelation will include a save-transfer bonus of the kind Rebirth offered to Remake owners; both remain unannounced rather than ruled out. The two post-launch story expansions likewise have no release windows beyond "after launch." Everything else in this preview, from the April 8 date to the FITS system and the returning regions, comes directly from the State of Play broadcast and Square Enix's own published materials, not from unofficial leaks.

Standard, Premium and Premium Plus editions are listed now on the Steam store page, with the Premium tier adding 24-hour early access and the Premium Plus tier adding an art book and mini soundtrack. All editions include a Mecha-Chocobo and Moogle Summon Materia as a pre-order bonus.

Why This Matters

Revelation closing the loop on a project that began with 2020's Remake gives Square Enix its clearest finish line yet for the trilogy, and putting Wutai and Rocket Town front and center suggests the studio is using the extra time since Rebirth to fill in the corners of the original game that the first two remakes skipped past. With six and a half months until launch, expect the next major update to focus on the two confirmed post-launch expansions rather than the base game.
