Rayman Suits Up as Astro Bot in Rayman Legends Retold's New Trailer

A new PlayStation trailer shows Rayman wearing Astro Bot's costume in Rayman Legends Retold, flipping 2024's cameo ahead of the game's December 3 launch.

Astro Bot made a cameo appearance inside Rayman's world back in 2024. Now the favor is being returned. A new PlayStation Blog post and a 30-second trailer confirm that Rayman will wear Astro Bot's own costume in Rayman Legends Retold, Ubisoft's remake of the 2013 platformer, closing a loop between two of PlayStation's most colorful mascots.

A Costume, Not Just a Cameo

The PS5-exclusive outfit is a free pickup, available the moment a player first visits Victor Velour, the game's resident tailor, at his in-game costume shop. There's no unlock grind attached to it: show up, talk to Victor, and Rayman walks out dressed as the Captain of the Bots.

The design itself is a joint effort between Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Montpellier and Team Asobi, the same three studios credited with the earlier Rayman cameo inside Astro Bot. That shared credit line is notable; it means Astro Bot's own developer had a direct hand in how its mascot gets reinterpreted inside somebody else's game, rather than just licensing out a character model.

Translating a Robot Into a Platforming Icon

Quentin Chaillet, Lead Character Artist on Rayman Legends Retold, described the costume as a deliberate clash of visual languages. "One of the biggest challenges was bringing Astro Bot's sleek, futuristic aesthetic into Rayman's universe," Chaillet said. "Rayman's designs traditionally have a more handcrafted, organic feel, so introducing these glossy surfaces, metallic details, and high-tech materials was something quite different from what we're used to."

That meant preserving Rayman's silhouette cues, his oversized nose, his limbless body, his floating shoes, while still reading unmistakably as Astro Bot. The team leaned on the reflective metallic panels and glowing blue accents that make Astro Bot instantly recognizable, fitting them onto a frame that was never built to wear armor plating in the first place.

Two Mascots, One Shared Spirit

Guillaume Arvieu, Art and World Director on Rayman Legends Retold, framed the crossover as more than a cosmetic nod. Astro Bot, he said, has "truly established itself as a major player in the platforming genre, with an identity of its own," and the two franchises share a common thread: colorful worlds built around fluid movement and the joy of discovering new mechanics rather than punishing difficulty.

Arvieu also pointed to the generational handoff baked into the pairing. Rayman first appeared on the original PlayStation, while Astro Bot has become the console's current mascot. Dressing one as the other is, in his words, a way "of bringing different generations of players together."

A Remake Worth the Wait

Rayman Legends Retold was first announced at a PlayStation State of Play back in June, originally targeting an October 1 release. Both the official Ubisoft game page and the title's Steam store listing now confirm a new date: December 3, 2026, on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.

The slip gives the remake more room to deliver on its pitch: a full visual overhaul of the original's hand-painted stages, a retold story, musical levels rebuilt around the game's rhythm-based platforming, and four-player couch co-op. The Astro Bot costume is a launch-window perk rather than a late addition, so it should be waiting in Victor Velour's shop from day one.

The original Rayman Legends first shipped in 2013 as a Wii U exclusive before expanding to PS4, Xbox One and PC, and it has spent more than a decade being cited as one of the best pure platformers of its generation. Retold isn't a remaster that simply bumps the resolution; Ubisoft has described it as a ground-up revisit of the art direction, with new lighting, reworked character models and additional content layered onto the original's level design rather than replacing it.

Why It's Worth Watching

Crossover costumes are common enough in platformers, but this one carries weight because of who's doing the work. Team Asobi isn't licensing Astro Bot out passively; its artists are co-credited on how their own character gets reinterpreted. For a studio whose entire PS5 era has been built on affectionate references to PlayStation history, having Astro Bot formally step into Rayman's shoes, almost literally, is as close to canon as a costume swap gets.

Nothing has been said yet about whether the reverse cameo gets expanded further, or whether other Astro Bot collaborators might get similar full-costume treatment down the line. For now, the trailer is the clearest confirmation players have that the two platformers are leaning into each other's legacy rather than just trading character models.
