Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis Launches Today With a Classic Mode Built for Its 15th Year
Ironhide's tower defense prequel launches today on Steam and mobile with 18 new stages, plus a 15th-anniversary Classic Mode that revives the original four towers.
Fifteen years after a browser game about a general defending Linirea turned into one of the most durable tower defense franchises around, Ironhide Game Studio is sending players back to where it all started. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD launches today, September 24, on Steam, iOS and Android, casting the campaign as a prequel that follows a young Vez'nan before the corruption that turns him into the series' recurring villain takes hold.
A Prequel Fifteen Years in the Making
Ironhide, the Uruguay-based studio that has built the entire Kingdom Rush series since the original 2011 release, frames Genesis as an origin story rather than a straight sequel. The campaign sends players back to Linirea's early days, revisiting locations from the first game and recruiting familiar heroes before they became the veterans of later entries. Ironhide first detailed the plan in a June 2026 update that paired a free Steam demo with mobile pre-orders and a new trailer, setting today's date as the finish line.
The demo picked up real momentum ahead of launch. Ironhide reported 25,000 players tried the trial build on its first day alone, and a strong showing during Steam Next Fest later pushed the demo into the festival's top played list. The studio used those wishlist milestones to unlock extra content in the trial build over the summer, adding two more stages, two additional modes and a further tower before pulling the demo down ahead of the full release.
Ironhide has stayed a comparatively small operation throughout that run. The studio built the original Kingdom Rush as a browser game before console and mobile ports turned it into a franchise, and it has kept the series largely in-house across six mainline entries, the free-to-play spin-off Kingdom Rush Battles, and assorted vault and origins releases, rather than handing the IP off to a larger publisher. That independence is part of why the 15th-anniversary framing around Genesis leans so heavily on the community: contests, giveaways and in-game events are running through Ironhide's own channels and Discord server rather than a broader marketing push.

What's New in the Fight for Linirea
The full release ships with 18 campaign stages, 15 towers, 12 heroes and 9 spells, plus more than 50 achievements to chase. Structurally it is still classic Kingdom Rush: build towers along a fixed path, mix in hero units and spells, and out-think waves of enemies rather than out-click them. Where Genesis diverges is in how towers grow. Responding to feedback from the demo period, Ironhide dropped the individual per-tower leveling system it had been testing and returned to the series' familiar global upgrade track, alongside a reworked interface meant to match the rest of the franchise's look.
- 15 towers with skills designed to combo into one another
- 12 heroes, with two available per stage
- 9 spells, including series mainstays alongside new additions
- 18 campaign stages set during Linirea's earlier history
Classic Mode Turns Back the Clock
The centerpiece of Ironhide's 15th-anniversary celebration is Classic Mode, revealed in a dedicated announcement in late July. It strips the campaign down to the original 2011 toolkit: one hero, and only the four founding tower families, Barracks, Archer, Mage and Artillery, complete with their original upgrade paths and specialist forms like the Rangers Hideout, Arcane Wizard and Big Bertha. Only two spells, Rain of Fire and Reinforcements, are available, pushing players toward the tighter, more deliberate strategy that defined the first game.
Lead Designer Juan Fernández described Classic Mode as one of the features the team is proudest of in Genesis, and the constraint is the point: fewer tools, older rules, and stages built for the newer campaign but playable with the roster that made the original game a hit.
“This is a mode we're really excited about! In it, players can tackle the Campaign stages but using the original Kingdom Rush set of Towers, Spells, and only 1 Hero available.”Juan Fernández, Lead Designer at Ironhide Game Studio

Where and How to Play
Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD is out now on Steam for PC, with a free demo still available for anyone who wants to try before buying, and on the App Store and Google Play for mobile, where the game supports offline play. Ironhide has said the anniversary push continues past launch day, with community contests, in-game events and further Kingdom Rush Battles content planned through the rest of the year.
For a fifteen-year-old franchise built by a small studio that has stayed independent through six mainline entries and multiple spin-offs, Genesis is as much a victory lap as a new release, and Classic Mode gives longtime players a direct way to measure how far the series has come since that first browser build.
