Songs of Glimmerwick Launches as Eastshade Studios Caps an Eight-Year Build
Three-person studio Eastshade Studios shipped Songs of Glimmerwick on Steam September 30, closing an eight-year arc since its January 2022 reveal.
Eastshade Studios shipped Songs of Glimmerwick on Steam on September 30, ending an eight-year stretch of development for the three-person team behind the 2019 exploration game Eastshade. "The Etchery Awaits! Eight years in the making, we're elated to finally say Songs of Glimmerwick is out!" the studio wrote in its launch-day devblog post, offering a 10% discount on the Steam store page for the first two weeks.

The studio is just three full-time people: lead designer and artist Jaclyn Ciezadlo, technical director Danny Weinbaum, and programmer Jennifer Hide, working alongside composer Phoenix Glendinning. That is a fraction of the headcount behind most story-driven RPGs, and it shows in how long the project took to reach shelves after its January 2022 reveal.
Music Instead of Combat
Songs of Glimmerwick drops players into a woodland university town where spellcasting runs through a flute and songbook rather than a weapon. Students attend classes, tend a shared garden that grows stranger the more it is cultivated, and work through narrative quests built around the people and creatures of the island rather than enemy encounters. It is a direct extension of the non-combat, place-first design that Eastshade Studios built its name on with its debut game.
Eastshade Studios describes the core loop as learning songs that double as spells: calling rain over crops, coaxing tools into working unassisted, or raising ground to cross terrain. Side activities round out the school-year structure, including a tabletop game called "Forests and Fairies" and expeditions with an in-game nature club called the Green Sprites.
The game is built around a full academic year rather than an open-ended sandbox, with classes, seasonal festivals, local rumors and small-town drama giving the school calendar a sense of forward motion. Characters outside the player's immediate friend group still have their own routines and subplots, a structural choice the studio has carried over from Eastshade's emphasis on a living, walkable world rather than a static backdrop for quests.
A Long Road From Reveal to Release
The studio announced Songs of Glimmerwick in January 2022 as a follow-up to Eastshade, originally eyeing a 2023 release, and spent years posting progress through its own devblog rather than going quiet between press beats. A playable demo arrived on Steam on April 7, 2026, after the studio teased it alongside details on its NPC daily-schedule systems that March. On August 13, the studio confirmed September 30 as the release date, and the launch build arrived on schedule seven weeks later with console ports still unannounced for a specific date.

What Changed for Launch
Alongside the full release, Eastshade Studios posted a three-minute "plain and honest" explainer walking through what the finished game actually plays like, pitched at anyone deciding between the free demo and the full purchase. The studio has kept that demo live after launch specifically so prospective players can try the pacing before buying, a choice it frames as being upfront about a game that trades combat and failure states for exploration and routine.
Full voice acting across major and minor characters, a character customization pass, and a skill system that lets players lean into gardening, trading or social abilities like speaking to frogs are all present in the shipped build, alongside the music-as-magic mechanic that has anchored the game's marketing since reveal.
Why It Matters for Small Studios
A three-person team carrying a project from a 2022 reveal and a 2023 target to a 2026 launch is an unusually long runway even by indie standards. Songs of Glimmerwick's launch is as much a story about that staying power as it is about the game itself: Eastshade Studios built a loyal following on its first release's distinct tone, then took the time it needed to translate that into a second game rather than rushing a sequel to capitalize on name recognition.
The studio's own devblog is the clearest record of that patience: rather than going dark between major announcements, it kept posting development updates through 2024 and 2025, then used the final run-up to launch to walk back-to-back notes on NPC scheduling, a public demo, a dated release and the finished game, each logged in its own post rather than bundled into a single marketing push.
Console versions remain unconfirmed for a specific date, so PC via Steam is the only way to play Songs of Glimmerwick for now. The studio has not said which platforms will follow first.
