SpaceRocket Games' Permafrost Thaws Into Steam Early Access on October 9

SpaceRocket Games and publisher Toplitz Productions are opening the gates to Permafrost on October 9, 2026, putting the story-driven survival sandbox into Early Access on Steam, GOG.com and the Epic Games Store. It is a small-team production from a studio founded in 2023, built around a single, specific premise: a shattered moon has locked Earth into permanent winter, and surviving it is less about combat and more about staying warm long enough to find out what happened.

A frozen apocalypse opens its gates

Permafrost casts players as a "Rook," an engineer with rebuilding skills but no wilderness experience, pulled into the ice by a radio signal from a friend presumed lost. The pitch leans away from typical survival-game shootouts and fantasy creatures in favor of something colder and quieter: frostbite, storms, and scarcity as the real threats, with city ruins fading into open wilderness the further players wander from the last working shelter.

The setting grew out of a backstory the developers call "The Shattering," a cataclysm that destroyed the moon and buried the planet under snow and ice. A story trailer published in late September filled in more of that lore, and the Early Access build arrives with it already in place rather than bolted on later. That matters for a genre where narrative context is often an afterthought added once the survival loop is already locked.

What survivors will find in the Early Access build

The opening release is built around exploration-gated progression: players restore abandoned shelters, repair broken machines and reclaim old technology to push into new, harder regions rather than simply leveling up. Crafting, hunting and scavenging sit underneath that structure, with a shelter network standing in for the usual base-building loop. Where many survival games hand players a map and a timer, Permafrost's pitch is that distance and cold do the gating instead, and that reaching a new region should feel earned rather than unlocked.

A Steam Next Fest demo built around these same systems drew more than 300,000 downloads, and a closed playtest ran from October 2 to October 6 to stress-test the build immediately before launch. That is a reasonable amount of public testing for a studio this size, and it suggests the Early Access version isn't a first look so much as a refined one. The Steam listing also carries a fairly specific minimum spec for a game at this stage, calling for an Nvidia GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 590 and 16GB of RAM, which points to a build that leans on lighting and weather effects rather than a lightweight placeholder engine.

A dog, a radio signal, and three friends

Permafrost supports solo play or co-op for up to four, and the game is explicit that multiplayer isn't there to make survival easier. Shelter-building and supply runs are meant to be split across a group, with each player leaning on different specializations rather than everyone doing the same job in parallel. A rescued dog companion rounds out the cast, scouting ahead, flagging danger and hauling supplies — a small addition, but one the developers have repeatedly centered in their marketing rather than treating as a throwaway pet feature.

Why the delay from August to October

Permafrost was originally slated for Early Access on August 21, 2026, before Toplitz Productions pushed the date back seven weeks to October 9.

“Quality is key and when Permafrost finally unleashes its survival sandbox with a slight delay in October, we want to make sure that your fight for survival is a memorable gaming experience from start to finish.”Sebastian Fleer, COO of Toplitz Productions

The studio has framed the slip as a quality decision rather than a troubled one, using the extra time for broad finetuning across performance and content rather than fixing a single blocking issue. For a self-published-feeling Early Access title from a young studio, a short, explained delay followed by a pre-launch playtest is a healthier sign than silence would have been, and it lines up with a marketing cycle that has run gameplay reveals at the Future Games Show, OTK Games Expo and gamescom rather than going quiet between showings.

What's next for the frozen sandbox

Early Access survival games live or die on their post-launch cadence, and Permafrost's longer-term road map hasn't been detailed in the same press cycle that set the October 9 date. What is confirmed is the starting point: a single persistent frozen world, co-op for up to four, a dog companion that does more than follow players around, and a studio that has spent more than a year showing real gameplay footage rather than disappearing between trailers. Full-release scope, pricing changes and a launch window beyond Early Access are all still unannounced, and anything beyond what SpaceRocket Games and Toplitz Productions have confirmed should be treated as speculation until the studio says otherwise. Players curious whether the cold holds up under real play, rather than trailers, will get their first chance this week.
