Acer's first Predator-branded gaming handheld goes on sale today. The Predator Atlas 8 arrives exclusively at Best Buy in the United States for $1,299.99, built around Intel's new Arc G3 Extreme processor, and it marks the first time Intel's handheld-focused silicon has reached American store shelves in a finished product rather than a Computex demo unit.

Acer unveiled the Atlas 8 back in May, but pricing and a firm US release date stayed unconfirmed for months while Acer's preorder batch sold out. Today's launch settles both questions, and it puts Acer in direct competition with AMD-powered handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and the ROG Xbox Ally X, which have had the Windows handheld market mostly to themselves.

A new chip family makes its debut

The Atlas 8 is the first handheld to ship with Intel's Arc G-Series, a line of chips built specifically for portable gaming PCs rather than adapted from laptop silicon. The Best Buy configuration uses the top-tier Arc G3 Extreme, which pairs its CPU cores with an integrated Arc B390 GPU running ray tracing and Intel's XeSS 3 upscaling.

Acer says the chip's Vortex Flow cooling system uses two fans, including a metal AeroBlade unit borrowed from its Predator gaming laptops, to keep the Arc G3 Extreme running at sustained clocks during longer sessions. Intel has pitched the chip as a response to AMD's long-running grip on the handheld market, and the Atlas 8 is the device meant to prove the pitch works outside a trade-show booth.

What $1,299.99 buys

The US launch configuration pairs the Arc G3 Extreme with 24GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 512GB PCIe Gen4 SSD behind a single accessible M.2 2280 slot. The screen is an 8-inch IPS touch panel at 1920x1200 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate support, and a Gorilla Glass Victus cover, rated for 500 nits of peak brightness.

Controls include full-size analog sticks, Hall-effect triggers with adjustable trigger stops to shorten travel for shooters, rear macro buttons, and a fingerprint-reading power button. A dedicated PredatorSense button opens Acer's performance and fan-curve software directly from the handheld, without needing a keyboard or mouse.

  • Up to 80Wh battery (the Best Buy unit ships with the larger cell), weighing under 810 grams
  • Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a UHS-II microSD slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, with dual 2W speakers tuned for DTS:X Ultra
  • Windows 11 Home, running the full Steam, Xbox and Battle.net PC libraries rather than a locked-down console interface

Software and a Game Pass trial

Acer bundles two months of Xbox Game Pass Premium and three months of PC Game Pass with every Atlas 8, giving new owners a cloud and library trial before they commit to a subscription on top of the hardware cost. PredatorSense handles the usual handheld housekeeping: TDP and fan-curve presets, battery charge limits, and quick toggles for the VRR display.

Acer's chief operating officer, Jerry Kao, framed the device as a combination of established Predator design work and Intel's new silicon rather than a one-off experiment, and Intel's own messaging has leaned on the idea that handheld players want console-like freedom without giving up a PC's game library.

How it compares

At $1,299.99, the Atlas 8's Arc G3 Extreme configuration undercuts the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, which uses the same chip but ships with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for $1,799.99. Acer's machine trades some of that memory and storage headroom for a lower price, positioning it closer to premium AMD handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally X than to Valve's Steam Deck, which remains considerably cheaper and runs SteamOS rather than full Windows.

Whether the Arc G3 Extreme's promised efficiency gains hold up against AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme in real games, rather than in Intel's own slide decks, is the open question independent reviewers will spend the next few weeks answering now that retail units are finally shipping.

Availability

The Arc G3 Extreme configuration is live at Best Buy as of today, November 1, following a preorder run that sold out last week. Acer's global Predator Atlas 8 product page lists additional configurations, including a standard Arc G3 model with Arc B370 graphics, for international markets where pricing varies by region.
