Arkane Lyon Must Find a Buyer or Face Closure as Xbox's Reset Continues
Arkane Lyon, maker of the unreleased Marvel's Blade, must find a buyer under French labor law or risk closure as Xbox's year-long restructuring continues.
Arkane Lyon, the French studio behind Dishonored and Deathloop, now has a deadline hanging over it. According to an October 23 report from the newspaper Le Monde, the Xbox-owned studio must find a buyer or face closure, with its unreleased vampire-hunter game Marvel's Blade caught in the middle.
How Arkane Ended Up Here
The clock traces back to July 6, when Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told staff the division was beginning its "most significant restructuring" to date. Roughly 3,200 roles were set to disappear across fiscal 2027, about a fifth of Xbox's workforce, with 1,600 cuts landing immediately. Four studios left Xbox's portfolio that day: Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions returned to independent ownership with their catalogs intact, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs moved to new owners who committed funding to finish their current projects. Arkane Lyon was named as a fifth case, entering a formal review of its "strategic alternatives" rather than an immediate sale. Helen Chiang, previously head of Mojang Studios, was promoted to Xbox's first chief operating officer in the same shakeup, tasked with flattening management layers across the division.
Arkane itself is no stranger to Xbox's cost-cutting. Its sister studio, Arkane Austin, was shut down back in May 2024 during an earlier wave of layoffs at Bethesda's parent group, leaving the Lyon studio as the only Arkane outpost still standing.

A French Legal Clock Starts Ticking
The current review carries real legal weight in France. Companies above a certain size that plan large-scale layoffs are required by law to seek a buyer before closing a site outright, and Le Monde reports that Arkane's search began in the middle of summer. The paper's sourcing points to October 23 as the date consultations with Arkane's Social and Economic Committee were originally due to end, putting roughly 217 jobs at the Lyon studio on the line. Printemps Ecologique, described as Arkane's sole in-house union, told Le Monde that "several forms of takeover" are currently being discussed, though none has been finalized.
Microsoft Buys More Time
Microsoft has not confirmed a sale, a named buyer, or a closure. It has, however, confirmed that talks are ongoing: in a statement to press, the company said it had "extended the consultation period by one additional month as we explore options" and that it remains committed to keeping Arkane's works council informed throughout. Separately, Microsoft told Le Monde it is "actively seeking a partner to support the next phase of development and enable the commercialization of the project" — a reference to Marvel's Blade, the only game currently known to be in development at the studio.
Where That Leaves Marvel's Blade
Arkane Lyon unveiled Marvel's Blade at The Game Awards in December 2023, pitching it as a mature, single-player, third-person game following the vampire hunter Eric Brooks through Paris. The studio began pitching the concept to Bethesda in early 2022, shortly after shipping Deathloop, and the project moved into full production the following year. No platforms or release date have ever been announced, and nothing about the game changed when Arkane marked its own 25th anniversary with a retrospective piece last year. Printemps Ecologique has argued the game is nearing completion and called it "a monumental waste" to leave unreleased, but that is the union's characterization, not a confirmed production status from Arkane or Bethesda.
“My understanding is that there are multiple paths actively being explored that would save Arkane Lyon. Anything can happen during negotiations, but at this point I'd be surprised if the studio is shut down.”Jason Schreier, Bloomberg News reporter
What Happens Next
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who has closely tracked Xbox's restructuring since July, has publicly flagged multiple paths that could still keep Arkane Lyon open, and said he would be surprised if the studio closed outright, while cautioning that negotiations can still go sideways. For now, every party involved — Microsoft, Arkane, and the French works council — is still talking, with the extended consultation period expected to run into late November.
Until that process concludes, the only things known for certain are the ones Microsoft has put in writing: the search for a partner is active, Marvel's Blade is the asset at stake, and no final decision on Arkane Lyon's future has been made.
