ASUS Launches the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a $1,299 20th-Anniversary Handheld
ASUS's 20th-anniversary ROG Xbox Ally X20 hits shelves today with a 7.4-inch OLED screen and TMR sticks, priced $300 above the standard Ally X.
ASUS's limited-edition ROG Xbox Ally X20 went on sale today, October 15, giving shoppers a flashier, OLED-equipped take on the Xbox-branded Windows handheld the company launched with Microsoft a year ago. The standalone unit costs $1,299.99, a $300 premium over the standard ROG Xbox Ally X, while a $2,499 bundle adds a pair of augmented-reality glasses and anniversary-branded accessories.
The X20 name marks 20 years since ASUS founded its Republic of Gamers brand in 2006, and the handheld leans into that anniversary with a translucent black chassis and gold-accented internals, a design ASUS had already shown off at Computex back in June before confirming pricing and the October 15 ship date in an August 25 press release.

What Actually Changed From the Ally X
Under the hood, the X20 keeps the same silicon as the Ally X it is based on: an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB NVMe SSD. ASUS's own product listing confirms the chip and storage are unchanged, and reviewers who have already run both machines side by side have found the X20 no faster in raw performance than the handheld it replaces at the top of the lineup.
The headline upgrade is the screen. ASUS swapped the Ally X's 7-inch LCD for a 7.4-inch "ROG Nebula HDR" OLED panel running at 1080p and 120Hz, rated for 1,400 nits of peak brightness and certified to VESA's DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard. ASUS also fitted a new anti-reflective coating it says cuts glare by 65% compared with a standard OLED layer, along with Corning Gorilla Glass on top.
- 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR OLED, 1080p at 120Hz with FreeSync Premium Pro
- AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU with 24GB LPDDR5X and a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD
- TMR analog sticks and a new transforming d-pad built to resist drift
- 80Wh battery, two USB-C ports (one USB4/Thunderbolt 4) and a fingerprint power button
New Sticks, New D-Pad
ASUS also replaced the Ally X's analog sticks with TMR, or tunneling magnetoresistance, modules, a sensor type the company says all but eliminates the stick drift that has dogged earlier handhelds. The d-pad has been redesigned into a transforming unit that can switch between a traditional cross layout and an 8-way configuration, and the face buttons and triggers were reshaped to match the new shell.
Both sticks and the d-pad carry over the translucent theme, with the internal gold structure visible through the casing wherever the plastic is clear. ASUS fitted a fingerprint sensor into the power button for Windows Hello sign-in, a feature the base Ally models also offer.

The $2,499 Anniversary Bundle
Buyers who want the full 20th-anniversary package can pay $2,499 for a bundle that pairs the X20 with ROG's new XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a Bose-powered headset ASUS says projects a 171-inch virtual screen from four meters away on a 240Hz micro-OLED display. The bundle also throws in a dbrand Killswitch case with a custom skin and joystick covers, a Pelican protective case with red ROG latches and an anniversary badge, and a 68W charger.
The glasses connect over a single USB-C cable and support native 3DoF head tracking, according to ASUS's press materials, letting the X20 double as a private big-screen display for handheld sessions away from a TV.
Where It Lands in a Crowded Handheld Market
The X20 arrives as ASUS, Valve, Lenovo and Microsoft are all pushing Windows and SteamOS handhelds priced well above $500, and its $1,299 starting price puts it closer to a gaming laptop than a typical portable console. ASUS is positioning the OLED upgrade as the differentiator rather than raw power, betting that enthusiasts who already own an Ally X will pay for a better screen and drift-resistant sticks rather than wait for a true next-generation chip.
Both the X20 and the standard ROG Xbox Ally lineup run the same Xbox full-screen experience Microsoft built for Windows handhelds, including access to Xbox Game Pass and the Handheld Compatibility Program the companies introduced alongside the original Ally and Ally X.
Availability
ASUS says the standalone ROG Xbox Ally X20 and the anniversary bundle are both shipping now in the US through ASUS's own store and select retail partners, with Japanese and other regional pre-orders pointing to sales beginning there within the week. ASUS has not said whether the X20 will remain on sale on an ongoing basis or whether it is a limited anniversary run alongside the regular Ally X.
