Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ Mode Adds Crafting and Persistent Operators
Activision and Infinity Ward detail DMZ's new Forward Operating Base, crafting system and persistent Operators ahead of the October 23 launch.
Activision and Infinity Ward have laid out exactly how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's rebuilt DMZ mode works, publishing matching breakdowns on the PlayStation Blog and Xbox Wire this week. The mode returns as a standalone extraction shooter set inside the Hajin Exclusion Zone, and both platform posts confirm the same launch window: Campaign Early Access on Tuesday, October 16 for anyone who pre-orders, full DMZ access on Tuesday, October 20, and the complete game on Friday, October 23.
A new mission inside the Hajin Exclusion Zone
DMZ picks up after Modern Warfare 4's campaign, dropping squads into Hajin to identify and dismantle a threat the story leaves unresolved. The Call of Duty Blog's DMZ Deep Dive first detailed the setting back in June, and this week's posts confirm it survived largely intact: a persistent, player-versus-player-versus-environment space built around repeat visits rather than a single run. Xbox Wire frames the whole mode around five systems worth knowing before launch, while the PlayStation Blog's version works through the same ground from a progression-first angle.
Both publishers are explicit that DMZ ships only with Modern Warfare 4 itself this time. Xbox Wire confirms the mode is not included with Xbox Game Pass this year, and anyone wanting online multiplayer on Xbox separately needs a Game Pass Essential subscription.

Crafting takes over the Forward Operating Base
The Forward Operating Base, or FOB, is DMZ's hub between deployments, and both posts single out its new 3D Printer as the headline addition. Players feed it ordinary Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals) alongside rarer 3D Printer Ingredients such as Binding Catalysts and Detonators to craft gear and weapon upgrades, which can then sit in a player's Stash or get equipped straight away. The PlayStation Blog adds that the FOB expands over time, unlocking a Gunsmith for attachments, a rotating Vendor, a Bounty Leaderboard and a Boss Board for hunting named Lieutenants as players climb a 70-level DMZ progression track.
Three ways to deploy into Hajin
Squads choose between three deployment types every time they drop in. Story Missions replay Hajin's narrative objectives, some gated until earlier ones are finished, and reward high-value gear and DMZ Cash. Dynamic Operations send a squad after several objectives at once for a mix of DMZ XP, Cash and a Supply Drop. Free Roam strips away mission structure entirely, letting players explore Hajin City, loot at their own pace and simply get a feel for the map's Threat Levels before committing to something riskier.
Extraction shooters built around that same loop of looting, risk and a clean escape have become their own genre over the past few years, and squads who already play ARC Raiders and know which skills are worth prioritizing early will recognize the rhythm DMZ is chasing with Hajin's escalating Threat Levels.

Persistent Operators carry real risk
Every DMZ profile starts with two Operator slots, with a third unlocked later through DMZ levels. Operators who extract successfully level up a Dog Tag that spends Trait Points across three trees, Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, for a total of 18 points and more than 60 available Traits. The catch is what happens when an Operator doesn't make it out: a downed Operator goes MIA and can either be dismissed outright or ransomed back with DMZ Cash, a price that climbs the more Trait investment that Operator is carrying. A recovered Operator keeps its earned Traits but loses whatever gear it was holding when it went missing.
Looting, extraction and what's still unconfirmed
Loot in DMZ is shared across a player's whole active roster of Operators, Bank and Stash included, so searching containers during any deployment benefits the account rather than just the Operator in the field. Both Xbox Wire and the PlayStation Blog treat extraction itself as the mode's real tension point, calling in a pickup and holding the position while it arrives under pressure. Pricing is confirmed on the Xbox side, with Vault and standard editions of Modern Warfare 4 listed at $99.99 and $69.99. DMZ is included on the same platforms as the rest of Modern Warfare 4 at launch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, but not the older Xbox One. Neither official post has named a day-one PC progression carryover or cross-platform Operator syncing yet, so those specifics remain unconfirmed heading into October 23.
