Thirty years after a British archaeologist first swung across a chasm in search of forgotten ruins, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Game Studios have put a date on Lara Croft's next adventure. Xbox Wire's anniversary feature, published October 21, confirms that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches February 12, 2027, with pre-orders now open across every announced platform. The date lands almost exactly thirty years after Core Design's original shipped on PlayStation and Sega Saturn, turning what began as a straightforward remake announcement into the centerpiece of the franchise's anniversary year.

A Reimagining Thirty Years in the Making

The original Tomb Raider arrived in 1996 from Core Design, a six-person team in Derby, England, led by designer Toby Gard. It introduced Lara Croft as an athletic, academically minded adventurer hunting the scattered pieces of the Scion of Atlantis, a premise Legacy of Atlantis revives almost beat for beat three decades later.

Meagan Marie, Director of Brand Creative at Crystal Dynamics, says the original team's work still shapes how the studio builds Lara today. "They changed the face of the industry, and they changed the face of what we expect from our protagonists," she told Xbox Wire. "They are responsible for creating the franchise that we all love thirty years later."

What's New in Legacy of Atlantis

Built in Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics with co-development from Flying Wild Hog, Legacy of Atlantis sends Lara back through the jungles of Peru, the ruins of Greece, the deserts of Egypt and a Mediterranean island shrouded in myth. The Steam listing describes the game as deepening the connections between Lara's 1996 debut and her future adventures, while keeping the traversal, puzzle-solving and combat that defined the original.

Crystal Dynamics is positioning the project as a continuation rather than a straight reboot, carrying the tone of its own Survivor trilogy into a revisit of the original's story beats, locations and the hunt for the Scion. The studio has also described deeper connections between the 1996 story and events later in Lara's career, rather than simply retelling the same plot with upgraded visuals.

Flying Wild Hog's involvement marks its first major work on the series; the Polish studio is better known for the Shadow Warrior reboots and 2023's Evil West, giving Legacy of Atlantis an outside perspective on combat and traversal pacing alongside Crystal Dynamics' long-standing ownership of Lara's story and characterization.

From Core Design to Crystal Dynamics

Marie's own history with the franchise stretches back to Crystal Dynamics' Legend, Anniversary and Underworld trilogy, and she wrote the Game Informer cover story that first revealed 2013's Survivor-series reboot. "I just saw the vision and I fell in love with it," she said of that reboot, which introduced a generation of players to Lara for the first time.

That layered history is part of why Legacy of Atlantis carries weight beyond a simple remake. "There's that foundation of what makes Lara, Lara," Marie said, describing a character who has been rebuilt by multiple studios and writers across thirty years without losing her core curiosity and resolve.

Editions, Pricing and Pre-Orders

Amazon Game Studios is publishing Legacy of Atlantis under license from Crystal Dynamics. The Standard Edition is $59.99 and includes an early unlock of the Survivor Outfit; the Deluxe Edition is $69.99 and adds 48-hour early access, the Parisian Fugitive Outfit and a post-launch DLC story pack whose release timing has not been announced. Both editions are available to pre-order now on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 storefronts.

What Comes Next

Crystal Dynamics and Amazon are rolling out a mini-documentary series on the official Tomb Raider site and its YouTube channel, covering subjects from the writing room to Lara's reworked movement set. With roughly four months left before launch, Marie's closing assessment doubles as the series' own pitch for the franchise's fourth decade: "It's a culmination of everybody's passion and thirty years of history. We are just getting started."
