Helldivers 2's Noxious Terminid Update Adds Poison Mechanics and New Bug Caves
Arrowhead has deployed the venomous Noxious Terminid strain to Helldivers 2, adding a new poison status effect and expanding bug caves to more biomes.
Arrowhead Game Studios has deployed a new Terminid threat across Helldivers 2's war effort, and this one bites back. As of November 3, the "Noxious" strain is live on every active front, bringing a venomous new poison mechanic to the shooter and expanding where players can expect to find the game's cramped, close-quarters bug caves.
The update arrived through Helldivers 2's usual in-universe announcement style on the PlayStation Blog, with Arrowhead framing the new bugs as a fresh menace to Managed Democracy rather than issuing a dry patch-notes list. Underneath the propaganda, though, the changes are concrete: two new enemy types, a status effect that changes how players approach every encounter, and cave spawns that now reach biomes they previously skipped.

Meet the Noxious Strain
The update introduces two new Terminid variants built around speed and venom rather than raw armor. The Noxious Scavenger is a quicker, more erratic version of the standard Scavenger, closing distance fast and biting for poison damage. Arrowhead notes it is still fragile underneath that speed, so shotguns, flamethrowers and grenades remain effective counters once a Helldiver can land a hit.
The larger Noxious Spewer is the more dangerous of the pair. It moves quickly for its size, fires a Web Spit that halts sprinting on contact, and its bite carries both extra reach and a stronger venom payload than the Scavenger's. Its abdomen is unarmored, but shooting it detonates a Web Explosion that snares any Helldivers and bugs caught nearby, turning a clean kill into a crowd-control hazard if it isn't planned for.
How the New Poison System Works
Both Noxious enemies apply a new poison status that Arrowhead has built out as its own HUD element. Getting bitten now triggers a visible poison icon with two escalating stages. Lightly poisoned Helldivers get hazier vision and a slow drain on their health bar, while heavily poisoned Helldivers take faster damage over time and lose the ability to sprint entirely, mirroring the Noxious Spewer's web attack.
Stims clear the poison status outright, which gives the Supply Pack and other stim-focused loadouts a new reason to see play on Terminid fronts. Arrowhead describes the Noxious strain plainly in the announcement: "Designated the Noxious strain, these menaces are fast, venomous, and fundamentally opposed to Managed Democracy," wrote Mitchell Ayre, Community Manager at Arrowhead Game Studios.
Bug Caves Spread Across the Galaxy
Alongside the new enemies, Arrowhead has widened where bug caves can appear on the galactic war map. The subterranean encounters, which force squads into tight corridors and close-range firefights instead of the open bug-planet sprawl, can now spawn on biomes that previously never generated them, including desert and tundra worlds.
That change alone reshapes how a mission can play out on fronts that previously felt predictable. Caves reward squads who stick together and clear choke points methodically, and the Noxious Spewer's web traps are considerably more dangerous when there's no room to back away from the blast.

What It Means for the War Effort
Arrowhead has spent 2026 steadily reworking the Terminid roster rather than only adding bigger armored threats, and the Noxious strain continues that pattern by targeting player positioning and resource management instead of raw health pools. Pairing a new status effect with a wider cave footprint gives veteran Helldivers a reason to rethink loadouts they may have settled on since the faction's last major overhaul.
Arrowhead has not detailed a follow-up drop for the Terminid front, but the studio's cadence this year suggests the Illuminate and Automaton fronts can expect comparable attention before long. For now, every Helldiver dropping onto a bug planet should budget stims accordingly and treat any Spewer's web burst as a hard stop rather than a nuisance.
