Phoenix Cyclops Joins MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as First DLC Fighter on November 2
Arc System Works reveals Phoenix Cyclops, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls' first Year 1 DLC fighter, arriving November 2 with a free PlayStation Plus trial live now.
Arc System Works used a PlayStation Blog post published October 7 to confirm the first paid downloadable fighter for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Phoenix Cyclops, the opening character in the game's Year 1 Character and Stage Pass, joins the roster on November 2, and Sony opened a free trial for the full game the same day the announcement went live.

A New Look for an X-Men Icon
This Cyclops is drawn from his Phoenix Five period in the Avengers vs. X-Men comics, pairing his usual optic blasts with the raw cosmic force of the Phoenix. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka said the team deliberately avoided repeating how fighting games have portrayed Cyclops in the past. Past games typically depict Cyclops as a straightforward ranged attacker, and Yamanaka said that familiarity became a design problem once the team sat down to plan the character.
According to the PlayStation Blog post, the character is voiced by Ray Chase, who has also played Cyclops in X-Men '97, Marvel Rivals and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, giving the DLC fighter a consistent voice across several current Marvel projects. Yamanaka added that the studio considered several directions for the character before settling on the Phoenix Five version, ultimately holding the reveal back until the team felt the design added something to Cyclops' history in fighting games rather than repeating it.
Arc System Works first teased this version of the character back in July, when a short reveal clip showed him squaring off against Storm outside Xavier's School without showing his attacks in motion. Today's blog post is the first time the studio has detailed his actual moveset.
Solar Shards and the Dark Phoenix Transformation
Phoenix Cyclops is built as an all-rounder who can fight at range or up close. Landing Optic Blasts builds up Phoenix Force energy called Solar Shards, and collecting four of them lets the character transform into a Dark Phoenix form. The mechanic is a direct reference to the same comic arc: in Avengers vs. X-Men, Cyclops became one of the Phoenix Five and eventually absorbed his teammates' share of the Phoenix Force before turning into Dark Phoenix himself.
In the game, that transformation grants a temporary boost to damage and speed, but it also drains the character's own health while it is active, so players have to decide how long to stay in the form before the risk outweighs the reward. In the source comics, the Phoenix Five, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, Namor and Colossus, split the Phoenix Force's power among themselves after it arrived on Earth, and Cyclops' gradual absorption of the others' shares pushed him toward the villainous Dark Phoenix identity readers of the story will recognize. Reducing that arc to a resource meter that fills up over the course of a single match is a fairly literal translation of the comic, and it gives Phoenix Cyclops a clear risk-reward loop that separates him from the standard version of the character still in the base roster.
Costumes, Pricing and the Year 1 Pass
Two extra outfits, a "Classic" costume and a "Legacy" costume, unlock alongside the character on November 2. Phoenix Cyclops is not sold as a standalone purchase; he is included in the Year 1 Character and Stage Pass, which covers the DLC fighters and stages planned for the game's first year of post-launch support. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls itself launched on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 6, and Sony is running a storewide sale on the base game and its Ultimate Edition upgrade to coincide with this week's announcement.
Try Him Free Starting Today
PlayStation Plus subscribers can jump into a three-hour trial of the full game starting October 7, ahead of Phoenix Cyclops' launch next month. The trial covers the existing 20-character launch roster rather than the new DLC fighter, giving undecided players a way to test the tag-based combat system before the character pass goes live.
Players attending EVO France, running October 9 to 11, will also get an early, hands-on look at Phoenix Cyclops on the show floor, ahead of everyone else getting access on November 2. Sony has not said whether the character will be playable at any other events before then, and the blog post frames EVO France as the only confirmed hands-on opportunity ahead of launch.
“Because of that, we challenged ourselves to explore whether there was a way to present him in a style that felt different from what players had seen before.”Takeshi Yamanaka, Producer at Arc System Works

What Comes After Phoenix Cyclops
Arc System Works has not detailed who follows Phoenix Cyclops in the Year 1 lineup, and nothing beyond this character has been confirmed for the pass. The game's roster launched with 20 characters split into four-person teams, and today's reveal marks the first confirmed addition since release. Full patch notes and purchase details for the Steam version are expected closer to the character's launch window.
