Overwatch's Season 5 Launch Trailer Sends Doomfist to Break Doctrine Out of Prison
A new launch trailer for Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine shows Doomfist freeing the vampiric new Support hero Doctrine from Watchpoint: Grimsvotn.
Blizzard released the official launch trailer for Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine on October 5, giving players their first fully animated look at how the game's new vampiric Support hero actually enters the story. Season 5 itself went live on October 6, closing out the year-long Reign of Talon arc that has run across the game since February.
The two-and-a-half-minute trailer skips the battlefield fanfare of a typical hero reveal and plays instead like a jailbreak thriller. Doomfist leads a small Talon strike team into Watchpoint: Grimsvotn, the icy former Overwatch base where Doctrine has been held since before the season began, and the two walk out together as the facility collapses behind them.

A prison break instead of a parade
Where most recent Overwatch hero trailers have leaned on big cinematic set pieces built around a single power fantasy, A Grim Doctrine plays its reveal as a rescue. Doomfist cuts through Helix security forces to reach the cell block, and the final shots show Doctrine's drones scattering out ahead of him as the pair make their escape into the volcanic fissure outside. It is a smaller, more personal sequence than Blizzard's BlizzCon stage reveal of the character back in September, and it is clearly designed to hand the character off directly into Season 5's story missions rather than just sell his kit.
The trailer closes with the Season 5 logo and a straightforward message: Doctrine is playable immediately, alongside the new map and two major hero reworks detailed in Blizzard's own Season 5 patch notes.
What Doctrine actually does
Doctrine is Overwatch's 54th hero and its newest Support. His weapon, the Eternal Scepter, heals allies and damages enemies at mid-range, and firing it while the Infuse ability is active turns it into a larger piercing blast. Shrouded Momentum gives him a horizontal dash with damage reduction that becomes a brief free-flight when infused, and Invigorating Drones can be sent to a teammate to grant attack speed and healing over time.
“Moving her to a Support hero opened up a great path to tone down her damage slightly while maintaining her signature utility.”Alec Dawson, Overwatch Associate Game Director

His ultimate, Deliverance, launches a swarm of drones that caps enemy maximum health while granting Doctrine's own team Overhealth, a build-defining teamfight swing rather than a straightforward burst heal. A passive called Subrole: Survivor starts his health regenerating as soon as he uses a movement ability, and his Season 5 perks let players lean further into either sustain, with Sanguine Siphon converting infused scepter damage into self-healing, or risk, with Cost of Life trading 25 maximum health for a permanent 20 percent boost to scepter healing.
Watchpoint: Grimsvotn joins the map pool
Doctrine's origin story doubles as the introduction of Overwatch's newest Escort map, Watchpoint: Grimsvotn, Blizzard's first new map in that mode in several years. The level is built around a volcanic fissure in Iceland, a former Overwatch outpost that Helix later repurposed as a black-site prison for dangerous operatives, Doctrine included, before Talon's raid in the trailer hands it back over to chaos. The industrial, lava-lit corridors seen in the trailer's opening act are the same spaces players now fight through on the live map.
Sombra and Roadhog change roles and kits
Season 5 also carries two of the bigger balance swings Overwatch has made this year. Sombra moves from Damage into the Support role outright, keeping her Translocator and invisibility but gaining a scoped heal on Cyberspace and a weaken effect on enemies in place of some of her old burst damage. Overwatch Associate Game Director Alec Dawson explained the thinking behind the switch in an interview published ahead of the season: "Moving her to a Support hero opened up a great path to tone down her damage slightly while maintaining her signature utility."
Roadhog gets a smaller but still significant rework of his own. His Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley instead of one, with a stronger projectile at the center of the spread, and his new Trash Compactor ability absorbs incoming enemy projectiles before firing an explosive shot scaled to however much damage it soaked up.
Where to watch and play it
The full launch trailer is embedded above, and Doctrine, Watchpoint: Grimsvotn, and both hero reworks are live now for every Overwatch player on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Blizzard has not announced what, if anything, comes after Season 5 closes out the Reign of Talon storyline, so for now the vampiric new Support and his volcanic prison are the biggest things the game has to offer.
