Gears of War: E-Day's story trailer, broken down shot by shot

The Coalition's 2:14 story trailer gives the Locust the first 30 seconds and makes Kalona the second lead, three weeks before the 6 October launch.

The Coalition released a two-minute, 14-second story trailer for Gears of War: E-Day on the official Gears of War YouTube channel on 25 August 2026, the same day Xbox lifted the embargo on hands-on campaign previews. It is the first piece of E-Day marketing built around what the game is about rather than how it plays, and it is the clearest look yet at the shape of the campaign before the game arrives on 6 October.

Two details frame everything that follows. The trailer carries an "in-game footage and cinematics" disclaimer at the four-second mark, so individual shots cannot be read as gameplay by default. And the end card states "Emergence begins October 06, 2026" alongside the words "Xbox console exclusive" — a line worth holding on to, given where this series has been shipping lately.

The first half-minute belongs to the Locust

After the rating card, the trailer spends roughly 30 seconds without a single human face. It opens on an armoured Locust walking unhurried through a field of COG dead, then cuts to a run of extreme close-ups: segmented plate, a glowing red sigil set into a chest piece, a blue-lit mask, a hand flexing. At around 13 seconds a Boomer fills the frame. At 20 seconds a figure stands silhouetted against a falling column of imulsion, and at roughly 26 seconds a commander with a pistol stands in front of a cavern floor carpeted with torchlight, arms out, addressing ranks that run back further than the camera can resolve. A yellow, imulsion-lit skull fills the screen at 28 seconds, then The Coalition logo lands.

That ordering is the most interesting editorial choice in the whole cut. Every previous E-Day trailer has led with Marcus Fenix. This one establishes the invaders as an army with hierarchy, ritual and a staging ground before it shows you a single Gear, which squares with what the studio has said about wanting each enemy encounter to land as a first meeting.

Kalona is the second lead

The human half opens at about 32 seconds with Bravo Squad moving down a corridor, cuts to Marcus and Dominic Santiago side by side, then to a briefing room of Gears in clean, unmarked plate. At roughly 41 seconds four soldiers stand on a ledge above the Hollow, looking down into a red cavern lit by thousands of moving points of light — the same composition The Coalition uses as one of its store screenshots.

Then the trailer does something Gears trailers rarely bother with: it spends nearly 15 seconds on civilians. A wall of CRT televisions in an electronics store carries a broadcast at 50 seconds. At 53 seconds people in ordinary clothes run across a plaza as it detonates behind them. At 56 seconds Marcus is on the ground holding a civilian woman. At 59 seconds an older man in a COG dress rig is mid-argument with a woman in front of a bank of monitors. This is the "before" that campaign design director Raul Figueroa described on the Official Xbox Podcast, where he said the team wanted Kalona itself to work as a character.

The back half is combat, and it is the part the trailer edits hardest. Between roughly 1:00 and 1:10 you get flamethrower fire across a plaza, thin curling limbs rising out of fog, a Raven, and Marcus bloodied under green emergency lighting. Between 1:38 and 1:50 there is a many-eyed Locust beast roaring at camera, a chainsaw execution, Gears firing down from rooftop cover, and a flock moving across a burning sky seen from inside a cockpit.

The quieter beats it chooses to keep

Three shots do more work than any of the set pieces. At about 1:22 a young Gear sits in a tiled room with both hands over his mouth, still in armour, and does not move for three cuts. At 1:26 there is a fist bump in close-up with no faces in frame. At 1:58 Marcus and Dom stand nose to nose in red emergency light, Dom's eyes closed, and the trailer holds on Marcus for the last beat before the end card.

Xbox has confirmed that John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro return as Marcus and Dom, and the framing here makes the pitch plainly: this is a two-hander about the day their world ends, not an ensemble war film.

“Every time an enemy shows up, it's the first time, right? It's the first time Marcus and Dom have seen them.”Matt Searcy, Creative Director on Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition

What the footage confirms, and what it does not

Confirmed by the trailer itself: the single-city setting, a campaign structured around Bravo Squad rather than a wider COG front, first contact with each Locust type as a narrative event, and a release framing that puts the game on Xbox consoles only.

Not confirmed, and worth being clear about: there is no multiplayer footage in the cut at all. No Horde Siege, no Versus, nothing from the rebuilt movement and weapon sandbox the studio detailed in July. The disclaimer also means the Locust cold open, which is the most striking material in the trailer, may well be pre-rendered rather than something you will control.

The "Xbox console exclusive" line is the one genuine tension. Gears of War: Reloaded shipped on PlayStation 5 in August 2025, and the Gears account confirmed that release itself. E-Day's end card draws a line under any assumption that the mainline game follows.

The hard facts

  • Release: 6 October 2026, with up to five days' early access from 1 October for Premium and Collector's Edition buyers
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, via the Xbox store (Xbox Play Anywhere) and Steam
  • Price: $69.99 for the Standard Edition on Steam; day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no extra cost
  • Developer and publisher: The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios
  • Trailer: "Gears of War: E-Day | Official Story Trailer", 2:14, posted 25 August 2026

Edition breakdowns, the pre-order Exfil Dom skin and the Collector's Edition contents are all listed on the official editions post. Xbox published its own Act 2 campaign hands-on the same day the trailer went up, and it remains the most detailed written account of the game so far on Xbox Wire.

Another trailer is already queued

On 10 September the Xbox account said an all-new E-Day trailer arrives on Saturday. With three weeks to launch and the multiplayer beta already behind it, the remaining marketing beats are narrow: a launch trailer, a final look at Horde Siege, or the reveal of whatever the studio has been keeping off camera. The story trailer's job was to make you care about Kalona before any of that. On that measure it is the most effective thing The Coalition has cut for this game.
