Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Preload Times, File Sizes and New Settings Explained

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen opens its preload window today, two days before the expansion unlocks worldwide on October 9. Capcom has also published the exact per-platform release times and download sizes, and the free Title Update 4.0 patch landing alongside it reworks several performance options that matter well beyond the new snowy region of Norgan. Here is what to check before launch day, and which settings are worth revisiting once the update installs.

When Dark Arisen Actually Unlocks

Capcom's release-time breakdown, posted to the Dragon's Dogma 2 Steam news hub, splits the launch into two waves rather than one global moment. PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 unlock first, at midnight Moscow time between October 8 and 9, which works out to 5:00pm ET / 2:00pm PT on October 8. Xbox Series X|S and Steam follow roughly three hours later, at 3:00am Moscow time on October 9, or 8:00pm ET / 5:00pm PT on October 8. Anyone juggling cross-platform co-op with friends on a different storefront should plan around that gap rather than assume everyone goes live together.

Preloading opened on October 7, giving most players up to two days to get the files down before their region's server switch-on. Starting the download now avoids competing with everyone else's traffic in the final hours before launch, and it means the expansion is ready to play the moment each platform's clock ticks over.

Clear Space Before You Preload

The download size varies sharply by platform. On PS5, the Dark Arisen content installs alongside Title Update 04.000.000 for a comparatively light 17.06GB, since the console patch and expansion ship as one package. Xbox Series X|S and PC owners should budget considerably more: Capcom lists those downloads at roughly 66.92GB to 70GB, likely reflecting a fuller re-patch of the base game's assets on those platforms. Check free space on your install drive first; a half-finished preload that stalls on a full SSD is the easiest way to still be downloading at launch time.

“There was a considerable amount of feedback from players that they wanted to play more of Dragon's Dogma 2, but they specifically wanted more out of the combat.”Kento Kinoshita, Game Director, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen

What's Actually in the Expansion

Dark Arisen sends the Arisen north to Norgan, a long-abandoned region buried in permanent snow, where blizzards periodically cut visibility down to almost nothing, minimap included. The new story has players teaming up with an enigmatic figure named Eir to investigate the undying Fallen Dragon, while a loot-driven Relic Expedition cycle sends parties out into the cold to recover forgotten relics that unlock new weapons and skills, aided by a wolf companion, Freki, who can sniff out hidden caches. Capcom has built twelve Lost Rites dungeon challenges around that loop, plus new hairstyle and tattoo options in the character creator. The expansion is a $29.99 standalone purchase for existing owners, or $49.99 bundled with the base game, and it marks the series' first appearance on Nintendo Switch 2.

What Title Update 4.0 Changes on Launch Day

Update 4.0 ships free to every Dragon's Dogma 2 owner on October 9, whether or not they buy the expansion. The headline addition is a new Hard Mode difficulty option, alongside a restart feature that lets players begin a fresh playthrough while keeping their existing save data intact, similar to a New Game Plus. Pawns gain a new Orienteer specialization, and the rift crystals earned from interacting with a forgotten riftstone rise from 30 to 90; players who already used those riftstones before the update get the difference backfilled automatically when they next load the game. Select armor pieces also pick up heat-resistant properties, useful once Dark Arisen's Norgan blizzards start working against you.

The performance-relevant part of Update 4.0 is platform-specific: PlayStation 5 Pro owners get official support for an enhanced PSSR upscaling mode for the first time, and the Steam version adds FSR 3 frame generation alongside refreshed DLSS options. Both are worth testing immediately after the update installs, since Dragon's Dogma 2 has historically leaned hard on CPU time during crowded city scenes, and extra frame-generation headroom helps most exactly there.

Settings Added Since September Are Still Worth Revisiting

Update 4.0 builds on a September patch, Title Update 3.2, that already expanded the PC graphics menu considerably, and those options are easy to overlook if you haven't opened the settings screen since then. The additions include Volumetric Fog Resolution, Cloudscape Resolution, Foliage Density, Terrain Quality, Ray Tracing GI Quality, Ray Tracing GI Shading Quality, and Effect Reflections sliders, plus a Graphics Memory display that shows VRAM headroom directly in the menu. Console players got a parallel Resource-Intense Effects Quality option on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

  • CPU Saving Mode and NPC Culling are the two settings most likely to fix stutter in Vernworth or other crowded towns, since they directly reduce how much processing the game spends simulating nearby characters.
  • Swaying Grass Quality and Foliage Density are cheap to lower on mid-range GPUs and rarely noticeable once in motion, making them good first targets if frame rate still dips in the open world.
  • Capcom also quietly removed Denuvo from the PC version in the same update cycle, which several players reported shortened load times on slower drives.

A Fitting Follow-Up to the Base Game's Feedback

The scope of this pre-launch patching reflects how Capcom has framed the whole Dark Arisen cycle. "There was a considerable amount of feedback from players that they wanted to play more of Dragon's Dogma 2, but they specifically wanted more out of the combat," said Kento Kinoshita, Game Director on Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Hard Mode and the expanded Pawn specializations are a direct response to that, arriving as free additions rather than being locked behind the expansion's price tag.

For anyone coming back after a long break, the practical order of operations is straightforward: start the preload today, confirm your drive has room for the larger Xbox or Steam download, and once Update 4.0 installs on the 9th, open the graphics menu before diving into Norgan. Toggling CPU Saving Mode and NPC Culling on, and trying FSR 3 or the refreshed DLSS modes if you're on PC, takes less time than the loading screen into the game's opening cutscene.
