Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game's Avatar State Patch Reimagines Aang and Korra
Xbox's new Avatar State update redesigns menus and ranked mode, adds reimagined Avatar State forms for Aang and Korra, and rebalances every fighter.
Gameplay Group International and Paramount Games Studio shipped the biggest update yet for Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game on October 30, releasing the Avatar State Patch on Xbox Series X|S alongside a full menu and interface overhaul. The free update, detailed in a post on Xbox Wire, centers on two reimagined fighters built around the series' most dramatic power-up, plus a rebuilt Ranked Mode and balance passes across the whole roster.
The 1v1 fighter launched worldwide in the summer of 2026 with a 12-character roster drawn from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, developed by Gameplay Group International in collaboration with Avatar Studios and published under the unified Paramount Games Studio banner. The Avatar State Patch marks the game's fourth major content update since that launch, and the studio has continued treating it as an active live-service fighter rather than a one-and-done tie-in release.

Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra Join the Roster
The headline additions are Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra, playable variants that reinterpret the Avatar State seen throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, built in collaboration with Avatar Studios. Rather than simply reskinning the base fighters, the team gave each version its own silhouette, lighting and combat identity.
Avatar State Aang draws on his on-screen manifestations of past Avatars, from channeling Kyoshi on Avatar Day to his stand against the Sandbenders, and plays as a composed, precise striker rather than the acrobatic airbender players already know. Nightmare Korra leans the opposite way, built around the character's darkest corrupted state for a heavier, more aggressive moveset.
Ranked Mode 2.0 and a Full Interface Redesign
The patch also redesigns the game's menus, character select screen, stage select screen and in-match interface, and introduces Ranked Mode 2.0, a rebuilt competitive ladder aimed at giving matchmaking and rank progression a clearer structure. Alongside it, the update brings quality-of-life changes to Story Mode, Versus Mode and online play more broadly.
Avatar Aang also gains a new Level 4 super move, Roku's Inferno, which summons Avatar Roku to engulf the battlefield in flame, giving the base character a flashier closing option in high-level play.
Balance Changes Target Azula and Sokka
Every character receives balance adjustments in the Avatar State Patch. Azula's Ambition's Spark now tracks closer to opponents and has a larger hitbox, and the move can be flow canceled for tighter combo routes. Sokka can now cancel his sword special techniques into a boomerang toss after ten successful sword hits, opening up new punish and pressure options for a character built around weapon switching.
“For Aang, his Avatar pose looks to elevate his presence in all ways, while for Korra it looks to diminish it.”Santiago R. Villa (Art Director, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game)

Story Mode+ and a Year 1 Pass Character Vote
Beyond the headline fighters, the update adds Story Mode+, new Story difficulty settings, additional tutorials, Combo Trials and new Story stages available directly in Versus Mode, giving newer players more structured ways to learn each character's kit. Iroh, Ty Lee, Lin Beifong and Bolin are already confirmed for the game's Year 1 Pass roster, and the Avatar State Patch opens an in-game vote for the pass's fifth character, letting players choose between Tenzin, Kuvira, Amon, King Bumi and Asami Sato over the next month.
Why the Timing Matters
The update lands as Paramount Games Studio continues consolidating its library under one banner following Skydance's acquisition of the former Paramount studios, with Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game remaining one of its most actively supported live titles since launch. For Xbox Series X|S owners, the Avatar State Patch is a free download, and the game remains available in Standard and Digital Deluxe editions, the latter bundling the Year 1 Pass. The Standard Edition also carries a Story Mode written by original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Tim Hedrick, alongside Arcade Mode, Training Mode and an in-game Art Gallery.
