Coin Crew Games is bringing its co-op puzzle series back to PlayStation. The studio confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School launches on PS5 on November 5, trading the first game's linear string of escape rooms for a single open-world campus players can wander between puzzles.

From a String of Rooms to a Living Campus

The original Escape Academy sent players through a fixed sequence of timed rooms. The sequel restructures that entirely: the school is now one connected map split into themed sections, each packed with side quests, hidden collectibles and multi-stage escapes rather than a single locked door. Coin Crew says returning players and newcomers alike can jump in without having finished the first game, since the story has been rebuilt to stand on its own.

Couch and online co-op are both available from the moment players start, covering the full campus, main story and every puzzle in it, matching the series' long-standing pitch of solving rooms together rather than racing a solo clock.

Back to the Headmaster's Tower

Art Director Michelle Huttunen writes that the Headmaster's Tower was one of the first spaces the team rebuilt for the sequel, since it had to set the tone for how "Academic" the rest of the school should feel before each campus got its own distinct identity. That work looped back to the Headmaster's Office itself, the setting of the very first escape room in 2022's Escape Academy, which returns with an overhauled art style meant to still be recognizable to series veterans.

The Humanities Campus, Rebuilt After the Fire

The Humanities Campus makes its own return with a twist: in the first game's story, a character named Quanty burned its library down. The sequel's version of the district has been reconstructed with a more open layout than the original's flat 2D map, adding interactable landmarks, side quests and fresh escapes rather than a single corridor of doors.

Huttunen describes the area as deliberately cozier than the rest of the school, built around faculty offices, classrooms and a library meant to invite a quiet coffee break between puzzles rather than the "rough and gritty" industrial feel she says the Science Campus carries elsewhere on the map. Players won't be able to enter the Humanities Campus right away; Coin Crew is teasing it instead with a keyhole-shaped fountain visible from across the school long before it unlocks, plus a scattering of hidden keyhole details for players to track down campus-wide.

Open to Newcomers, Built for Exploration

Coin Crew is positioning the open campus as the biggest structural change in the sequel, and the one that took the most iteration to get right. According to the blog post, early versions of the Humanities Campus felt too sprawling before the team added enough landmarks and side activities to give it direction. The goal, in Huttunen's words, is for the world itself to double as a puzzle: something players can spot from a distance long before they work out how to reach it.

That philosophy extends to the moment-to-moment design as well. Puzzles are no longer confined to single rooms behind closed doors; the campus grounds themselves now hide clues and mechanisms, which is part of why Coin Crew built co-op support in from day one rather than bolting it on afterward.

What's Next

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is already playable on PC via a Steam demo ahead of its full release, with the PS5 version arriving November 5 alongside existing plans for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Coin Crew hasn't detailed pricing or a Game Pass release window for the PlayStation version, and gamers6 will update this story if either is confirmed.
