Sony Reveals a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition, Japan-Only and Timed to GTA 6
Sony has announced a limited-run Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan, launching November 19 at 55,000 yen alongside a matching disc drive and GTA VI.
Sony has given the Japan-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition a new coat of paint. On October 13, the official PlayStation Blog in Japan confirmed a limited-run Midnight Black version of the console, model number CFI-2200B02S, arriving November 19 at the same 55,000 yen ($350) price as the existing white model.

A Familiar Price, a New Finish
The Midnight Black Digital Edition keeps every spec of the current Japan-only hardware: an 825GB custom SSD, the same ultra-high-speed I/O, 3D Audio and PS4 backward compatibility. What changes is the shell, which moves from the standard white side panels to a glossy black finish that matches the console's internal components and blue trim. Sony is treating it as a limited-quantity release rather than a permanent replacement for the white model, so it is likely to sell out faster than the standard edition once preorders open.
Sony's own blog post is explicit that this is a cosmetic change only: no new APU revision, no storage bump and no changes to the included controller beyond its matching black shell. That keeps the pitch simple for shoppers who already know the hardware but want a different look on the shelf, rather than asking them to weigh any new performance trade-offs.
Preorders begin October 20 through participating retailers and e-commerce sites across Japan, rolling out store by store rather than all at once. As with every Japan-only Digital Edition since the line launched, the console only functions on a PlayStation account with its region set to Japan and its system language set to Japanese, so it remains out of reach for importers without workarounds.
The Disc Drive Gets the Same Treatment
Because the Digital Edition ships without an optical drive, Sony is also releasing a matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, the same day for 11,980 yen. It's the same clip-on unit sold for the white model, just recolored to match, and it lets owners add physical-media support after the fact rather than committing to it at purchase. Both the console and the drive are confirmed only for the Japanese market so far; Sony has not said whether the colorway will reach any other region.
In the box, buyers get the console itself, a DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal stand feet, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable and printed documentation, plus Astro's Playroom preinstalled. The vertical stand, as with every current PS5 model, is sold separately.
Why November 19
The release date is not a coincidence. November 19 is also the Japanese launch day for Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5, giving retailers an obvious console-plus-game bundling moment during one of the biggest release windows of the year. Sony has leaned on similar timing before, pairing special hardware with major first- and third-party launches rather than spacing them out.
Sony is sweetening the purchase further with a standing warranty campaign that extends coverage on Japan-only Digital Edition consoles from one year to two, provided buyers register before March 31, 2027. The Midnight Black model qualifies under the same terms as the white version it sits alongside.
Still a Japan-Only Story
The Japan-only Digital Edition itself isn't new: Sony introduced the cheaper, region-locked SKU in late 2025 to curb exports driven by exchange-rate arbitrage and to keep the console more affordable for domestic buyers. Midnight Black is simply the first new colorway applied to it, following the same playbook Sony has used for accessories like the PlayStation Portal and DualSense Edge, both of which previously got their own Midnight Black variants.
Nothing in the announcement suggests a Western release is coming, and Sony's own product listing for the Japan-only line still frames Midnight Black as a regional, limited-quantity option rather than a global rollout. For now, the matte black Digital Edition and its matching disc drive remain a Japan-exclusive release, timed squarely to one of November's biggest launch days.
