Sucker Punch Details How It Rebuilt Jin Sakai for Ghost of Yotei's Most Wanted Mode

Sucker Punch's team explains how they retargeted 60-plus attacks, rebuilt Jin Sakai's face and voice, and brought the Ghost of Tsushima hero back as a playable character.

Sucker Punch Productions has pulled back the curtain on one of its most requested crossovers: rebuilding Ghost of Tsushima hero Jin Sakai from the ground up so he could become a fully playable character in Ghost of Yotei's new Most Wanted mode. In a November 4 PlayStation Blog post, six members of the development team walked through just how much work went into making sure Jin felt like himself again.

Most Wanted launched October 1 as part of Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, pairing a roguelike bounty-hunting structure with four playable characters: Atsu, Oyuki, Nagato and Jin. Sucker Punch says fan clips of players tearing through bounties as the returning Ghost of Tsushima protagonist have been pouring in since launch, which is why the studio chose now to explain the process behind him.

Jin first appeared in 2020's Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch's prior open-world samurai epic, which predates Ghost of Yotei's own 17th-century setting by roughly three centuries. Most Wanted is the first time either character has shared a game, and the studio treated it less like a cosmetic skin swap and more like reverse-engineering an entire character from a previous engine era.

No Half Measures for a Legacy Character

According to Systems Design Lead Parker Hamilton, the team initially prototyped Most Wanted with other characters before testing Jin, and an early playtest changed the scope of the whole project. Lead Combat Designer Ted Fishman concluded that there was no middle ground once the team saw Jin in action.

Hamilton and the team settled on bringing back the character in full rather than a stripped-down version built only for the new mode.

Retargeting 60-Plus Attacks Without Breaking Them

Programmer Nate Slottow and Senior Staff Animator Mark Wheeler detailed the technical side of the rebuild. Jin's more than 60 attack animations, many with their own dedicated kill animations, had to be retargeted onto Yotei's character rig, retouched and rebalanced for a different combat system. The team found that some of Jin's original moves, like Stone Stance's Piercing Strike, were far too strong once ported over and needed tuning.

Perks were written to echo how Jin played in the original game. The new Rattling Parry perk, for instance, recreates his old habit of interrupting enemy combos on a well-timed block by adding extra Stagger damage on successful parries.

Rebuilding a Face Players Already Know

Character Artist Nate Ramsey and Production Art Director Joanna Wang covered the visual side. Jin was originally modeled for PS4-era Ghost of Tsushima, while Yotei was built for PS5, so the team used his old textures as a base and layered in sharper skin detail, scarring and new normal maps without changing his established silhouette. Ramsey said the challenge was adding fidelity without tipping into a different-looking character, while Wang's team preserved small gestures fans would recognize, including the way Jin's thumb pushes against his sword's tsuba before a duel.

Giving Jin His Voice and Blade Back

Audio Director Brad Meyer's team rebuilt Jin's special-attack sound design and movement audio, and re-recorded his musical theme with lap steel guitarist Justin Johnson. Voice actor Daisuke Tsuji returned to reprise Jin, and some of those new recording sessions ended up feeding a handful of Jin lines back into Ghost of Yotei's main campaign as well.

Why Sucker Punch Is Explaining It Now

Most Wanted and the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion both arrived with Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition on October 1, and the studio's decision to detail the rebuild more than a month later suggests it's leaning into the mode's staying power rather than treating it as a one-off launch feature. For a developer that built its name on Ghost of Tsushima, bringing Jin back intact, stances, perks, voice and all, doubles as a vote of confidence that the crossover resonated with players exactly as intended.

The studio also used the post to credit the full chain of people who touched Jin's return, from systems design through animation, art, and audio, rather than framing the character as a single marketing beat. That framing matters for how Sucker Punch positions Ghost of Yotei going forward: Most Wanted is built to keep expanding with new bounties and runs, and a playable character this detailed is a strong signal the mode is meant to be a long-term pillar of the Complete Edition rather than a launch-week curiosity.

  • Most Wanted: four playable characters, escalating bounty difficulty, run-based perks and upgrades
  • Jin Sakai: all four Ghost of Tsushima stances intact, plus Most Wanted-specific perks like Rattling Parry
  • Available now as part of Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, which requires patch v2.0 or later
