Crimson Desert's Charting the Unknown DLC Slips Two Weeks to October 29

Pearl Abyss has pushed Crimson Desert's first expansion back two weeks for polish, moving Charting the Unknown's naval and underwater adventure to October 29.

Pearl Abyss has pushed back the first paid expansion for Crimson Desert, moving Charting the Unknown from its planned October 15 launch to October 29. The Korean studio confirmed the two-week slip on September 30, saying it needed more time to polish the add-on before release, and the new date is now live across every storefront selling the DLC.

The delay lands less than seven months after Crimson Desert itself finally shipped in March following years of its own rescheduling, so a short pause on the first expansion is a familiar rhythm for Pearl Abyss watchers. What matters for previews purposes is that Charting the Unknown is real, dated, priced, and backed by a reveal trailer that already shows off its biggest additions: a ship, the ocean around Pywel, and the first underwater spaces the open world has had.

What Charting the Unknown Actually Adds

The expansion centers on naval and underwater exploration that the base game never offered. Protagonist Kliff can command his own ship to sail out from the coast of Pywel toward islands that were previously unreachable, then dive beneath the surface to search sunken ruins for treasure and hidden story content. Pearl Abyss has also upgraded the game's Housing mode, letting players rent and customize living spaces, manage facilities, and build relationships with the continent's NPCs between expeditions.

None of that comes without resistance. The expansion introduces new land and sea threats designed around the fresh traversal options, including mechanical enemies described in early footage as dragon-, squid-, and crab-shaped machines. Combat against them is framed as requiring different tactics than anything in the main campaign, since several of the new foes fight across both water and land in the same encounter.

A Story Picking Up After the Credits

Charting the Unknown continues directly from the base game's ending rather than functioning as a side activity. Kliff is joined by series regulars Oongka and Damiane as the trio follow new leads across Pywel, and Pearl Abyss has teased plot threads involving a lingering desert presence, a political conflict, and an "ancient secret beneath the waves" tied to the new underwater areas. The studio has kept specifics light, but the official DLC page frames it as a proper continuation of the characters' arcs rather than a standalone vignette.

Why the Release Date Moved

Pearl Abyss's statement on the delay was brief and consistent with how the studio has handled previous slips: it wants the expansion to land in a more finished state rather than ship to the original date. "We have determined that we need additional development time to deliver a more polished and stable gameplay experience," the team wrote in its announcement, adding that it looks forward to welcoming players back to Pywel on October 29. No specific bug, platform, or system was named as the cause, and Pearl Abyss has not walked back any of the features it detailed at the expansion's reveal.

Platforms, Price, and Regional Timing

Charting the Unknown arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, priced at $24.99 as a stand-alone purchase requiring the base game. Pearl Abyss has staggered the worldwide rollout across time zones: Europe gets the expansion at 22:00 UTC on October 29, North America follows at 3:00 PM PT the same day, and the Asian release lands at 7:00 AM KST/JST on October 30. Anyone who pre-orders ahead of launch receives the Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane, a cosmetic bonus tied to the expansion's new ocean activities.

What We're Watching Ahead of Launch

The biggest open question is how deep the underwater content actually runs. Pearl Abyss's reveal trailer leans heavily on spectacle, including a sequence of Kliff riding a shark-like creature through a flooded abyss while being chased by a massive robotic dragon, but the studio hasn't detailed how much of the new ocean space is built for exploration versus scripted set pieces. The Housing upgrades are the other wrinkle worth tracking, since base-building systems in open-world action games tend to live or die on how much they interact with the rest of the world rather than sitting apart from it.

Three weeks remain before Charting the Unknown is playable, which should be enough time for Pearl Abyss to put out further gameplay breakdowns of the new combat and traversal systems. Until then, the Steam listing and the studio's own DLC page remain the most reliable sources for exactly what players will be doing once they reach Pywel's coastline on October 29.
