Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Locks In an October 14 Launch, Reveals Final Boss Vashtorr

Auroch Digital confirms Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 launches October 14 on PC, PS5 and Xbox, as a new trailer reveals daemonic antagonist Vashtorr.

Auroch Digital has locked in a launch date for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, confirming the retro-styled first-person shooter arrives on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 14, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version to follow. The release-date trailer, published on the studio's Steam store page and on Warhammer Community, also gave players their first proper look at the sequel's final boss: Vashtorr the Arkifane.

The original Boltgun launched in May 2023 to strong reviews, including an 85 from PC Gamer and an 8/10 from GameSpot, both praising how closely its pixel-art grimdark setting matched the speed and weight of classic 1990s shooters. That reception is the reason Auroch Digital's sequel has been one of the more closely watched boomer shooters of the year, and why a confirmed date and a named final boss both count as real news for the series rather than routine marketing.

A demigod built from war machines

Vashtorr is described in the reveal as a daemonic demigod of "inventors, engineers, scientists and artisans," a Chaos entity who forges daemon engines by binding daemons into war machinery rather than pledging loyalty to any single Chaos god. In the story, he awakens a vast daemonic machine at the centre of an isolated planet, an explosion powerful enough to wipe out much of an Imperial fleet in the opening hours of the campaign. Early footage suggests his forces draw on daemons aligned with all four Chaos gods rather than one faction, which would make him a structurally different kind of final boss than the single-god cults the first game built its levels around. It is a bigger, more mechanical threat than anything the first Boltgun put in front of players, and the trailer leans into that scale with glimpses of daemon engines built from scavenged Imperial hardware.

Two soldiers, one fractured star system

The sequel again puts players behind the business end of a boltgun as Sternguard Veteran Malum Caedo, returning from the 2023 original, or a new playable option, Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath. Per the game's own Steam listing, the pair travel to an isolated star system to investigate reports of rising Chaos activity, only to find themselves on the back foot once Vashtorr's machine detonates. The branching, single-player campaign then sends them world to world to burn out the corruption Vashtorr leaves behind, with Auroch Digital promising more enemy types, more weapons and new traversal options than the first game offered.

Mick Gordon joins the purge

The release-date trailer also doubles as a composer reveal: Mick Gordon, best known for his scores on DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal and Wolfenstein: The New Order, contributed an original track built around Vashtorr's introduction. It is Gordon's first credited work on a Warhammer 40,000 game, and a notable get for a sequel that is otherwise built by a mid-size studio rather than a blockbuster publisher. Auroch Digital has not said whether Gordon's involvement extends beyond this one boss encounter, but the pairing of his industrial, percussive style with a planet-cracking daemon engine is a clear attempt to raise the stakes for the finale.

A free demo is already live

Players who want a preview before launch don't have to wait: a free demo of Boltgun 2 has been available on Steam since the Warhammer Skulls showcase earlier this year, covering an early slice of Malum Caedo's campaign. That demo predates the Vashtorr reveal and the new character option, but it already carries over the "unrepentant strafing action" the first Boltgun built its reputation on, now with an expanded arsenal and new enemy types including Bloodletters and Juggernaut-mounted foes. It also doesn't yet include Nyra Veyrath's moveset, so anyone who wants to compare both playable characters before buying will still be waiting on launch day for the second half of that pitch.

Auroch Digital has been explicit that the finished campaign branches rather than running a single linear path from world to world, letting players choose the order in which they chase down Vashtorr's machine across the isolated star system. That structure was present in a smaller form in the original Boltgun, but the studio has framed the sequel's version as a bigger, more consequential set of choices rather than a cosmetic reordering of the same handful of levels.

Platforms, publisher and what's still unconfirmed

Boltgun 2 is published by Big Fan Games, the Devolver Digital label behind licensed adaptations like Hellboy Web of Wyrd, working with Bristol-based developer Auroch Digital. The October 14 date covers PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S simultaneously; Auroch Digital has confirmed a Nintendo Switch 2 release is coming but has not yet set a date for it, so Switch 2 owners hoping to play at launch alongside everyone else will need to wait for a separate announcement.

With the villain, cast and release date now locked down, the only open questions are how the Switch 2 port compares and whether Gordon's contribution extends past a single boss theme. Either way, October 14 is now a firm date on the calendar for anyone who spent the original Boltgun mowing down cultists in glorious, chunky pixel art.
