Saros' New PlayStation Trailer Breaks Down Every Overlord Boss Fight in Carcosa

A new PlayStation video walks through every Overlord boss in Saros, as Housemarque and Nixxes explain how the Zenith update's five fights were built.

A new compilation video on PlayStation's official YouTube channel, titled "Saros — All Bosses," runs through every major encounter in Housemarque's PS5 exclusive, and it arrives alongside a detailed PlayStation Blog feature explaining exactly how those fights came together. Written jointly by Nixxes Game Director Micah Hrehovcsik and Housemarque Creative Director Gregory Louden, the post pulls back the curtain on the five Overlords of Carcosa that anchor Saros' campaign, just days after the game's free Zenith update turned those same fights into a repeatable boss-rush mode.

Saros follows Soltari enforcer Arjun Devraj, voiced by Rahul Kohli, as he is pulled into a recurring eclipse over the alien world of Carcosa and forced to fight his way deeper into it on each cycle. The five Overlords function as the campaign's central boss gauntlet, and until this week, the clearest public look at how all five were built had been scattered across separate trailers and hands-on previews rather than gathered in one place.

A Co-Development Built Around Boss Encounters

Saros paired two PlayStation Studios teams on a single cinematic action game: Housemarque, the Finnish studio behind Returnal, and Nixxes, the Dutch studio better known for porting and remastering PlayStation exclusives on PC. According to the new blog post, the split was deliberate. Housemarque owned the creative vision for Carcosa, the combat language built around protagonist Arjun Devraj, and the bullet-hell visual style that carries over from the studio's earlier work. Nixxes then took that vision into encounter design, animation, environment construction, lighting and the technical work of actually shipping each fight.

"Boss fights in Saros are fully staged encounters, not just enemies with larger health bars," the two directors write, describing a production process where Housemarque pitched the vision and gameplay goals for each Overlord before Nixxes built prototypes, iterated through playtesting and carried the fight to final polish.

Five Overlords, Five Very Different Arenas

The compilation trailer and the accompanying write-up walk through each boss in the order players meet them:

  • The Prophet is the first wall boss, designed to introduce boss combat without blocking a player's progress through Carcosa.
  • The Architect fights from a collapsing tower, where the grapple hook becomes as central to survival as any weapon.
  • The Shepherd is the largest Overlord, a tentacled horror fought aboard a ship in a storm that ends on a sloped, unstable arena.
  • The Priestess turns the fight into illusion-based clone combat before moving players to a floating arena that mixes combat with platforming and puzzles.
  • The King, the campaign's final Overlord, escalates in three stages from controlled aggression to something feral, testing every system the game has taught up to that point.

Three Phases and No Panic Button

Every Overlord fight in Saros follows the same internal structure, regardless of its setting: three distinct phases, with most encounters running roughly three to eight minutes. The directors say the team's guiding question for each fight was whether a player who lost would understand why, and would want to immediately try again rather than quit. That meant building fights around deliberate movement, with the shield, dash, parry and jump treated as equal partners to Arjun's weapons, rather than panic-button escapes from unavoidable damage.

Zenith Turned the Bosses Into a Leaderboard

The timing of the new video and blog post is not a coincidence. Housemarque shipped Saros' free Zenith update on October 19, adding an Overlord Rush mode that chains several boss fights together against a global leaderboard, alongside a New Game Plus-style Eclipse Layers mode and a toggleable Slow Game Speed accessibility option. "Saros — All Bosses" effectively functions as a highlight reel for that new mode, giving returning players a refresher on each Overlord's attack patterns before they attempt a timed run, while giving anyone who hasn't played Saros a condensed look at what the campaign's back half actually demands.

For a studio whose history runs through fast, score-driven arcade shooters like Resogun and Returnal, folding that sensibility into a boss-rush mode built on top of an existing single-player campaign is a logical next step rather than a reinvention. The 31-year-old Finnish studio, now a wholly owned PlayStation Studios subsidiary, has spent the past decade shifting from pure arcade design toward the hybrid of narrative and twitch combat that defines both Returnal and Saros.

Where to Watch

The full "Saros — All Bosses" video is embedded above, and the PlayStation Blog post includes four additional clips breaking individual fights down in more detail, including dedicated looks at the Prophet and the King. Saros is available now exclusively on PS5, with the Zenith update, Overlord Rush mode and all five Overlord encounters included at no extra cost for existing owners. Housemarque and Nixxes have not announced further post-launch content for Saros beyond Zenith, and nothing in this week's posts points to a new story expansion, so anything beyond the current boss roster remains unconfirmed for now.
