How to fix The Blood of Dawnwalker's PC stutter and shader crashes

Rebel Wolves has shipped four hotfixes in eight days. Here is what to change in Dawnwalker's PC options, and what the patch notes really fix.

Rebel Wolves has shipped four numbered hotfixes for The Blood of Dawnwalker in the eight days since it launched, and most of what they touch is performance rather than quests. Hotfix 1.0.5, which went live on 10 September, is a single line: improvements to the shader compilation pipeline. Alongside the patches the studio published a short list of known issues with workarounds it expects players to apply themselves, including one that changes a setting most people never look at. Here is what the official patch notes and system requirements actually say, and the order in which to change things.

What Rebel Wolves has actually published

The studio's Steam store page lists two specification tiers and nothing else. There are no published preset targets, no frame rate figures and no resolution guidance, which matters when you are trying to work out whether your machine is meant to be running High or Medium.

Two details in that table do real work. The SSD requirement appears in both tiers, not just the recommended one, so a mechanical drive is not a supported configuration. And the minimum GPU is a GTX 1060, a card with no tensor hardware at all, which means DLSS is not an option on the minimum spec and AMD's FSR is the only upscaler that tier can use.

Start with display mode, not the graphics preset

The first workaround Rebel Wolves published on launch day has nothing to do with image quality. In the Known Issues post of 3 September, and again in the Hotfix 1.0.2 notes, the studio listed "game stuttering when in Windowed / Borderless mode" and told players to launch in Full Screen instead. That is an exclusive fullscreen path, and it is the single change most likely to smooth out frame pacing on a machine that otherwise meets the recommended spec.

Do that before you start pulling sliders down. A borderless window hands presentation to the desktop compositor, so the stutter it causes is not a symptom of an overloaded GPU and dropping Shadows or View Distance will not cure it. If you run the game on a second monitor or alt-tab constantly, test Full Screen for one session and compare before deciding the trade is not worth it.

The second item to check is the patch you are on. Hotfix 1.0.4, released 9 September, fixed a case where "connecting controllers with the outdated GameInput software" caused frame rate drops. GameInput is Microsoft's controller runtime, and the symptom there is a frame rate that collapses the moment a pad is plugged in rather than one that was always low. If you saw that behaviour and have not restarted Steam since 9 September, verify the build before changing anything else.

The shader-compilation crash is a CPU problem, not a driver one

The most serious launch-week issue is a crash while the game compiles shaders, and Rebel Wolves was unusually direct about the cause. Its fix is to update your motherboard BIOS, and the post links to RAD Game Tools' advisory on Intel processor instability rather than to its own support channel.

That page covers the known degradation affecting 13th and 14th generation Intel Core parts, where the most common failure in Unreal Engine titles is a shader decompression error. RAD's guidance is blunt: install the BIOS update before symptoms appear, because "once the crashes start, it's too late for a software solution". If you are on a 13900K or 14700K class chip and the game dies during shader compilation, updating the BIOS from your board vendor is the first step, and a warranty replacement is the second if it has already degraded.

Hotfix 1.0.5 is the other half of this story. Rebel Wolves describes it as improvements to the shader compilation pipeline "which can fix stuttering issues for some users" — hedged language that suggests the traversal stutter many players reported is still being worked on rather than closed out.

Upscaling: what ships in the box, and what the NVIDIA app adds

The game launched with DLSS Super Resolution on GeForce RTX hardware and FSR for everyone else. NVIDIA's own 1 September post states that Dawnwalker "launches this Thursday with support for DLSS Super Resolution, which can be upgraded to DLSS 4.5 via the NVIDIA app". That override is worth doing on any RTX card: it swaps the model the game shipped with for the current one without the developer having to patch anything, and it costs nothing in frame rate.

On the quality mode itself, the recommended tier is built around an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 XT with 8 GB of VRAM, which is a 1080p-class configuration in 2026. If you are on that hardware at 1440p, treat upscaling as mandatory rather than optional and set Quality rather than Balanced before you start cutting individual settings. The 6 GB VRAM floor on the minimum tier is the more restrictive number, and texture-related settings are what you reduce when you are short of VRAM rather than the ones that cost shader time.

Frame generation, VSync and the order of operations

Frame generation in Dawnwalker is FSR Frame Generation, and it had a specific bug at launch. Hotfix 1.0.4 lists "fixed issues with VSync when using FSR Frame Generation" under its Plugin section, so if you enabled both before 9 September and saw tearing or a capped frame rate that made no sense, that combination is what caused it. Test the pair again on the current build rather than assuming frame generation is broken.

A sensible order on PC: set Full Screen, confirm you are on 1.0.5, enable upscaling at Quality, apply the DLSS 4.5 override in the NVIDIA app if you have an RTX card, and only then decide whether FSR Frame Generation buys you anything. Frame generation multiplies the frame rate you already have, so it is the last thing to turn on, not the first.

One thing Rebel Wolves has not delivered is the detail it promised. Its 23 June update to the PC requirements said that fuller requirements and preset guidance, covering the middle and top of the scale, would follow once optimisation was finished. As of 11 September the patch notes hub and the store page still carry only the minimum and recommended tiers. The game passed one million copies sold on 9 September and sits at Very Positive across more than 18,000 Steam reviews, so the audience for that document is not small. Until it appears, the hotfix notes and NVIDIA's DLSS listing are the only official guidance there is.
