How to Clear 212GB and Get Your PS5 Ready for GTA VI's November 10 Pre-Download

Rockstar and Sony confirm Grand Theft Auto VI's PS5 pre-download opens November 10 and needs 212GB free. Here's how to check, clear and add storage in time.

Rockstar Games and Sony have put a hard number and a hard date on the biggest storage headache of the year. Starting November 10, players who have pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 can begin pre-downloading the game ahead of its November 19 launch, and Sony says you'll need to clear a minimum of 212GB of free space first. That is one of the largest install sizes ever shipped on a console, and for most PS5 owners it means an afternoon of deleting, archiving or upgrading before the download window opens.

What Rockstar and Sony Have Confirmed

The PlayStation Blog post announcing the pre-download lays out the plan in simple terms: pre-loading opens at local midnight on November 10 for anyone who has pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI through the PlayStation Store or a participating retailer, and the game itself unlocks on November 19. Sony is also using the pre-order window to push its Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition, which bundles the base game with an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel and actions tied to protagonists Jason and Lucia's story, on top of the standard release.

Rockstar has said the Xbox Series X|S version becomes available to pre-load the same day, though Sony's post is written for PS5 owners and that is the platform with an official, dated announcement to work from. Whichever console you're on, the file size and the clock both start on November 10, so the prep work below is worth doing this week rather than the night before.

How Much Space You Actually Need

The 212GB figure comes directly from Sony's post, which tells players to "get ready by clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space" on their console. That is a floor, not an average file size you can round down from, and Rockstar has indicated the exact figure can vary slightly by platform and storage device. For context, a launch PS5 ships with an 825GB SSD and the Slim model with 1TB, and Sony's own product pages note that a portion of any PS5's drive is permanently reserved for system software, so the space you can actually fill with games has always been smaller than the number printed on the box.

That gap matters more than usual here. If your PS5 already has a healthy library installed, 212GB free can mean deleting several full games, not just clearing out an old patch or two.

Checking and Freeing Up Space on Your PS5

Before you touch anything, see where you actually stand:

  • Go to Settings > Storage on your PS5 to see exactly how much space is free on your internal SSD and on any installed M.2 SSD.
  • Open the Games and Apps list and sort by size, since a handful of large open-world or multiplayer titles are usually responsible for most of your used space.
  • Delete the application for anything you're not actively playing rather than archiving it, since archived apps on a full console still count against your free space until fully removed.
  • Check for saved screen captures and video clips in the Media Gallery, which can quietly add up to several gigabytes on a console that's been in use for a while.

Save data itself is tiny and tied to your account rather than the game install, so you won't lose progress in anything you remove, and reinstalling later just means downloading the game again when you have the room.

If you've already got games sitting on a USB extended storage drive, don't count that space as available for Grand Theft Auto VI. PS5 games moved to USB storage have to be copied back to internal or M.2 storage before they'll run, and new downloads can't be sent straight to a USB drive in the first place, so any title you plan to actually play needs its 212GB worth of room on the console's own SSD or an installed M.2 drive, not on an external one sitting in a drawer.

If You're Still Short: Adding an M.2 SSD

If deleting games alone won't get you to 212GB, or you'd rather not make room by uninstalling things you like, the PS5 and PS5 Pro both support internal expansion. Sony's own support page for installing an M.2 SSD lists the exact requirements: a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD in the M key form factor, between 250GB and 8TB of capacity, no wider than 25mm including its heatsink, and one of the standard lengths from 30mm up to 110mm. A heat-dissipation mechanism, either a built-in heatsink or an applied heat-transfer sheet, is mandatory; a bare M.2 drive without one isn't supported, and SATA-based M.2 drives won't work at all since the PS5's expansion slot only reads PCIe NVMe drives.

Two practical notes before you install one: make sure your console is already running the latest system software, since the expansion slot only recognizes a drive after that update has been applied, and plan on formatting the drive the first time you use it, which the console will prompt you to do automatically. Once that's done, the extra storage behaves exactly like the internal SSD for installing, launching and patching both PS5 and PS4 games.

Getting the Rest of Your Setup Ready

Storage is the headline issue, but it isn't the only thing Sony is asking pre-order customers to check before November 10. The PlayStation Blog post also recommends confirming your PlayStation account sign-in details are current, since the pre-download and the day-one unlock are both tied to your account rather than the disc or purchase receipt. If you're buying digitally, that pre-order needs to go through the PlayStation Store listing for Grand Theft Auto VI or a participating retailer before the pre-load window opens, not after.

Sony's post rounds out its suggestions with a nod to accessories built for long sessions in Leonida, including the DualSense Edge controller and the Pulse wireless headset and speaker lineup, though none of that affects whether the game will actually fit on your drive. The one number that does is 212GB, and with the pre-download clock starting in a matter of days, this week is the right time to check your free space rather than finding out at midnight on the 10th. More on Grand Theft Auto VI, including any updates to the pre-load figures, can be found on the official Rockstar Games site for the game and on its Wikipedia entry, which both outline the November 19 release across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
