Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access Goes Live Ahead of Its Standalone October 23 Launch
Pre-order DMZ access is live three days before launch, but Modern Warfare 4 won't reach Xbox Game Pass until Holiday 2027 as Activision bets on a standalone debut.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 does not officially launch until October 23, but for players who pre-ordered digitally, the countdown effectively ended this week. Activision and Infinity Ward opened early access to DMZ on October 20, three days ahead of the full release, giving pre-order holders their first extended look at the extraction mode's rebuilt take on the Korean Peninsula setting before everyone else gets in.
DMZ Early Access Opens Ahead of Launch
Anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4 can now drop into DMZ, following campaign early access that began October 16 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Physical pre-orders are not included in either early window; those copies ship on launch day like everyone else. The staggered rollout mirrors how Infinity Ward introduced the original Modern Warfare II campaign early access, but this is the first time DMZ itself has had its own dedicated head start, giving pre-order players roughly three full days to loot, extract and gear up before the servers open to the wider public.
Infinity Ward has spent much of the past year rebuilding DMZ from the ground up rather than simply porting the Modern Warfare II version forward, adding a persistent Forward Operating Base players can upgrade between runs and dedicated crafting stations for assembling loadouts mid-match. Whether that overhaul lands is now something pre-order players, not just preview attendees, can judge for themselves days before the rest of the audience gets a chance.
A Standalone Release, Not a Game Pass Day One
The bigger story around this launch is what is missing from it. Modern Warfare 4 will not be included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass when it releases on October 23. According to Activision's own launch post, the game will not join either subscription tier until Holiday 2027, a full year's wait that marks a sharp break from the day-one Game Pass releases Call of Duty has had since Activision Blizzard joined Microsoft. Subscribers who want in at launch will need to buy the game outright, through the Xbox Store, the Xbox app on PC, the Microsoft Store, Steam, Battle.net or the PlayStation Store. Every digital pre-order carries the Hunter Killer Operator skin and a Gilded Pearl camo pack regardless of edition, and Xbox console buyers get an OG Green color treatment on their pre-order weapon blueprint, a nod to the platform's 25th anniversary this year.

What's Actually New This Time
Modern Warfare 4 is also the first mainline entry since 2013 to skip PS4 and Xbox One entirely, launching only on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The campaign follows Captain Price through a shadow operation that collides with a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula, with missions also set in New York, Paris and Mumbai. Multiplayer launches with 12 new 6v6 maps, and DMZ returns as a persistent extraction mode with an upgradeable Forward Operating Base. Players still deciding which edition to buy ahead of Friday's launch can check a closer look at pricing across every platform for a breakdown of what each version includes.
Why Game Pass Members Aren't Shut Out Entirely
Xbox has been careful to frame this as a timing change rather than an exit. Existing Call of Duty entries, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, remain available to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers throughout the Modern Warfare 4 launch window. The policy traces back to an April announcement that cut Game Pass Ultimate's price from $29.99 to $22.99 a month in exchange for moving new Call of Duty releases off the day-one slot.
“I hope they enjoy our campaign, and I'll see them in multiplayer and DMZ.”Jack O'Hara, co-studio head, Infinity Ward

What Happens on October 23
Launch day itself brings the game to every confirmed platform at once, closing out both early access windows and opening servers to anyone who buys in on October 23. For now, the early access period is the clearest signal of how Modern Warfare 4 will actually play before review embargoes and wider public reaction land alongside the full release. DMZ's early return gives a three-day preview of whether the rebuilt extraction mode holds up against the genre it set out to chase.
