Mojang Reveals The Sift, Minecraft's First New Dimension in 14 Years
At Minecraft LIVE, Mojang unveiled the Sift, a fourth dimension debuting in Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29 before reaching Java and Bedrock in 2027.
Mojang used its Minecraft LIVE Fall 2026 broadcast on September 26 to confirm something the studio has teased for months: a genuine fourth dimension is coming to Minecraft. Called the Sift, it is the first new dimension the ten-year-old sandbox has gained since the End arrived over 14 years ago, and it will not stay locked away in a spin-off for long.
Players get their first real look at the Sift in three days, when Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29. Mojang and Xbox Game Studios confirmed the dimension will then make its way into the core game, on Java and Bedrock Edition, sometime in 2027.

A Fourth Dimension, 14 Years in the Making
Since 2011, Minecraft's cosmology has had exactly three stops: the Overworld, the fiery Nether, and the End. The Sift becomes the fourth, and Mojang is treating it as a genuinely new kind of space rather than another biome variant bolted onto the Overworld. According to the studio's own rundown, published on Xbox Wire, the Sift brings its own look, its own mobs and its own rules for players to learn once they step through.
That framing matters for a game whose last major structural addition, the End, is now old enough to be in secondary school. Mojang has spent recent years adding biomes, mobs and gameplay systems to existing dimensions rather than expanding the map of realities itself, so a fourth destination is the biggest world-building swing the studio has taken in over a decade.
Neon Meadows and the Carapace
Mojang is still keeping most specifics close to the chest, but the broadcast and accompanying materials sketched an unusual, vividly colored realm built around a mix of neon blue and pink, with named areas including the Meadows and the Carapace. In the opening stretch of Minecraft Dungeons II, strange events begin to upend the natural order of the Overworld: new enemy types appear, and souls start drifting through the world before players are pulled into the Sift itself.
Mojang describes the shift as more than cosmetic. The studio says conditions inside the Sift can actively affect a player's character and the creatures around them, hinting at mechanics tied to the dimension rather than a simple reskin of existing biomes.

From Dungeons II to Vanilla Minecraft
The staggered rollout is deliberate. Minecraft Dungeons II, which adds a jump mechanic and a reworked talisman-based armor system on top of its Deep Dark and Ancient City storyline, will give players an early, spin-off-flavored version of the Sift starting September 29. Mojang has said the dimension's appearance and rules there won't necessarily match how it eventually behaves once it reaches the mainline game.
Exactly how players will access the Sift in standard Minecraft, and what 2027 date it lands on, has not been announced. Mojang's guidance for now is that anyone curious about the dimension's mobs, blocks and biomes should look to Dungeons II for the closest preview available.
The Rest of Minecraft LIVE
The Sift wasn't the only reveal. Mojang also detailed Ice Caves, a rare underground biome stocked with glowing ice crystals, ore deposits and a new Frozen Zombie that throws ice balls players can turn into freezing potions. On the platform side, Minecraft's enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 edition was confirmed for October 27, bringing the console up to the same visual fidelity as the Xbox and PlayStation versions. Mojang also previewed changes to its creator marketplace intended to make player-built content easier to discover and publish.
For a franchise whose core loop hasn't fundamentally changed in years, adding a fourth dimension is a rare structural bet. Whether the Sift becomes as embedded in Minecraft's identity as the Nether has been will depend on the details Mojang still hasn't shared, but the studio has now committed to a public deadline: 2027, however far into it that turns out to be.
