Housemarque Launches Saros' Free Zenith Update With a Boss Rush Mode
Saros' free Zenith update is live, adding a boss-rush mode with global leaderboards, a New Game Plus called Eclipse Layers, and new accessibility options.
Housemarque's cosmic shooter Saros just grew some new teeth. The PS5 exclusive picked up its first major content drop today, October 19, with a free update called Zenith that adds a boss-rush arena, a New Game Plus loop called Eclipse Layers, and a set of accessibility tools the Finnish studio says it built without softening the game's signature bullet-dense combat.
The update, detailed in a post on the PlayStation Blog, arrives nearly six months after Saros launched on April 30 and about a month after Housemarque first teased it during a September showcase. It is live now for every owner of the game at no extra cost.
Slower reflexes, automatic fire, and twenty new Modifiers
Zenith's headline accessibility feature is Slow Game Speed, which lets players reduce the pace of combat without changing what enemies actually throw at them. Housemarque says the setting can be tuned to taste and either triggered automatically in combat or toggled manually. Alongside it comes Auto-fire, which fires a held weapon automatically while aiming at a hostile (reloading stays manual), and a new Motion Sensor Aiming option that sits next to the existing button-remapping tools.
The update also adds 20 new Modifiers split evenly between two camps: 10 Protection Modifiers that ease the challenge, such as one that converts built-up Corruption into extra melee damage, and 10 Trial Modifiers that raise it, including one that forces players to finish stunned enemies with a melee strike before they regenerate. That brings the total number of Trials in Saros to 25.

Eclipse Layers crowns players who keep pushing past the credits
Eclipse Layers is Saros' take on New Game Plus. It unlocks once a player clears the campaign and opens new nodes in the Armor Matrix back at Passage, though reaching it requires hitting a threshold of Carcosan Modifiers first. While inside a Layer, the protagonist Arjun wears a Crown that visibly grows as his Modifier Balance climbs, and his armor takes on a gold glow to match. Scattered through the mode are 12 collectible "Visions," stone murals carrying story text that only becomes readable once a player's Crown reaches a high enough level.
Overlord Rush turns all eight bosses into a leaderboard sprint
The other new mode, Overlord Rush, is accessed through the Primary Unit back at Passage and builds a dedicated training space around Saros' boss roster. Two shorter sets, Incursion and Ascension, each pit players against three Overlords in roughly 10 minutes, while a longer Totality set strings together all eight bosses in one continuous run. Every attempt feeds a global leaderboard that can be filtered by main weapon, so players can compare times against others using the same loadout rather than the field at large.
Requirement: Housemarque notes that Overlord Rush needs an active internet connection and a PlayStation account to track leaderboard standings, unlike the rest of the single-player campaign.

A studio betting on harder, not easier
The philosophy behind Zenith comes straight from its design lead. Housemarque built the update's easier options around new Modifiers and a slower clock rather than by stripping out the enemy attacks that define Saros' "bullet ballet" combat, a distinction the team was keen to draw given how punishing the game can look to newcomers. The studio frames Zenith as serving two separate audiences at once: players who have already cleared Carcosa and want a reason to go back, and players who bounced off the difficulty the first time and might now have a way in.
Saros launched on PS5 this past April as Housemarque's spiritual follow-up to Returnal, and the studio's own announcement post frames Zenith as the first of what it expects will be ongoing support for the game rather than a one-off patch. No second update has been dated, and nothing beyond Zenith has been confirmed.
