EA Mines a 20,000-Tape Vault to Resurrect Road Rash and Six Wing Commander Games
EA restored Road Rash and six Wing Commander games into new Anniversary Editions, built from master tapes rescued from a 20,000-asset studio vault.
Electronic Arts has pulled 25 PC games out of its own archives and put them back on sale, headlined by the first-ever digital release of Road Rash and new Anniversary Editions of six Wing Commander titles. The collection landed on November 5 on Steam, GOG and the EA App, and the story of how it got there starts with a forgotten storage room at EA's Redwood Shores campus.
A Vault With Nearly 20,000 Tapes
In March 2022, EA Senior Producer Jim Vessella found a physical media vault on the Redwood Shores lot packed floor to ceiling with close to 20,000 archival assets: Betacam, VHS and D1 tapes, film reels and stacks of CD-ROMs. Vessella had seen a smaller version of this kind of cache during his time on the Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection in 2019, so he knew what might be hiding in the boxes, and he laid out the whole search in his own account on EA's news site.
Greg Roensch of the EA Story initiative spent months reorganizing the room chronologically, and by early 2024 a small contracting team was feeding tapes through four rented Betacam players on swing shifts, roughly 17 hours a day for eight weeks straight. Another 500 tapes in rarer formats went to a specialist vendor in San Francisco. By April 2026, the team had digitized about 6,000 assets and preserved an estimated 2,500 hours of footage, including a near-complete set of Master Source tapes for Road Rash and Wing Commander.

Seven Games, Rebuilt From the Master Tapes
Finding the tapes was only half the job. EA handed restoration work to the Wing Commander modding community, who had spent years independently patching the originals. Modder Matt Wells, known as Mash, had already built Enhancement Patches for the Kilrathi Saga version of Wing Commander III, and his work became the backbone of the new 30th Anniversary Editions of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom, now rebuilt from the recovered footage with higher-resolution FMVs, 60 FPS gameplay and modern input calibration.
Privateer 2: The Darkening got its own overhaul after original cinematics director Steve Hilliker turned up Digital 8 master tapes and cut a new Director's Cut with subtitles in English, French, German and Spanish. The original Wing Commander and Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi return in 35th Anniversary Editions built on the fan-made WCAT and Wcdx engines, while Wing Commander Prophecy folds in years of community patchwork behind a new launcher. Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition rounds out the set with its full 14-track soundtrack relicensed for the first time, native Xbox and PlayStation controller support, and the rock soundtrack finally playing during races as originally intended.
The Rest of the Collection
The other 18 releases are straightforward ports rather than restorations, but they fill out some of EA's deepest catalogue: Wing Commander: Privateer, Academy and Armada, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, both Crusader games, and all eleven mainline and Underworld entries in the Ultima series are now sitting on Steam alongside the Anniversary Editions, many of them playable on modern hardware for the first time without fan-made compatibility fixes.
“I knew from that moment we needed to find a way to get these tapes digitized and share them back with the community.”Jim Vessella, Senior Producer, EA Partners team, Electronic Arts

How to Get Them, and What's Free
All 25 games are discounted on Steam and GOG from November 5 through November 19. Anyone who already owns a digital copy of a Wing Commander game on GOG or the EA App gets the matching Anniversary Edition upgrade at no extra cost, a detail EA built in specifically for the series' long-running fan base.
Why a Publisher Dug Up Its Own Vault
Preservation projects like this one are rare precisely because they are slow: Vessella's own writeup spans more than three years between finding the tapes and shipping a product, most of it spent coordinating with the same modders who had kept these games alive on their own for decades. EA credited more than a dozen community figures by name for restoration work that began long before the publisher committed to an official release, an acknowledgment that is unusual for a AAA publisher revisiting its back catalogue.
