Bandai Namco's carrier decks are full again. ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, the first mainline entry in the arcade flight-combat series in seven years, opened early access for Digital Deluxe Edition owners on September 29, with the full release following for every platform on October 2. After a June reveal that locked in the date and a September story trailer that raised the stakes, the series' 30th-anniversary entry is now just days from putting every pilot in the cockpit.

A Long-Awaited Return to Strangereal

Wings of Theve is built on Unreal Engine 5 paired with Bandai Namco Aces' own "Cloudly" cloud and lighting technology, aimed at the kind of volumetric skies the studio has leaned on as a selling point since the project's reveal. The setting returns to Strangereal, the series' long-running fictional Earth, where the Federation of Central Usea (FCU) has been overrun by the Republic of Sotoa. Players fly as an ace pilot known only by the call sign "Wings of Theve," rescued at sea early in the story by the aging aircraft carrier Endurance and gradually built up into a symbol of resistance for a nation under occupation.

Flying With Joker Flight

The player doesn't fly alone. Wings of Theve joins "Joker Flight," a four-pilot squadron rounded out by Baxter, Tasha and Coster, each flying their own loadout of fighters, multirole aircraft and interceptors across the campaign's missions. Bandai Namco has used the squadron as the throughline for its marketing, including a September story trailer built around a dogfight against the elite Sotoan unit "Shadow 22." The Steam listing puts the roster at more than 30 real-world and fictional aircraft, continuing the series' habit of mixing licensed jets with original designs, split across four broad roles:

  • Fighters, built for dogfighting and air superiority
  • Attack aircraft, optimized for strikes on ground and naval targets
  • Multirole aircraft, balanced between air-to-air and air-to-ground loadouts
  • Electronic warfare aircraft, which can jam enemy radar and missile locks for the whole squadron

Annihilation Battle Returns

Alongside the story campaign, Bandai Namco confirmed the return of Annihilation Battle, a fan-favorite mission type that tasks players with leveling clusters of enemy infrastructure, such as a solar power plant, an oil tank farm, an air base and an ammo dump, in whatever order they choose. Supply lines let pilots rearm mid-mission, and chain-reaction explosions mean hitting the right flammable target first can take out buildings never directly targeted. Producer Manabu Shimomoto has pointed to the mission type as a showcase for the series' approach to player freedom, letting squadrons improvise a target order rather than following a scripted checklist.

Early Access, Bonuses and the Arcade Lobby

Early access opened Tuesday for anyone who bought the Digital Deluxe Edition, which bundles a flyable F-14A Tomcat and a full copy of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, the 2006 entry built around the series' original Ace Style mechanic. Outside of missions, players gather in a social lobby that functions less like a menu and more like a hangout space, complete with four playable arcade cabinets for Season 1: Pac-Man, Galaga, Rally-X and Dragon Spirit, with further classics promised to rotate in on a seasonal basis.

What to Expect at Launch

Press who went hands-on with the campaign ahead of launch singled out the series' trademark sense of altitude and speed, with cloud layers and weather now reacting dynamically to each dogfight rather than serving as static backdrops. Bandai Namco has also promised what it calls the largest online mode in the franchise's history, with cross-platform multiplayer and cooperative missions arriving alongside the campaign rather than in a later update. None of the multiplayer specifics have been detailed yet beyond that framing, so exact mode names and player counts remain unconfirmed ahead of the October 2 launch.

“I believe this mission category best embodies the core pillar of the Ace Combat series: the player's ability to eliminate enemies based on their own judgment.”Manabu Shimomoto, Producer, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

With early access already underway on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the remaining work before October 2 is mostly about scale: how the campaign's set-piece missions hold together across a full run rather than a trailer's highlight reel. Two of those set pieces are already public. Megafloat Fatsia is described as a six-kilometer artificial island built around an arms factory, with a 2,000-meter runway, a cold-fusion power plant and a 400-kilometer defensive perimeter patrolled by drones. Tonitrus Spear is a kinetic orbital weapon that drops dense metal rods on targets from roughly 500 kilometers up, giving the FCU's occupiers a threat no squadron of fighters can out-dogfight. The PlayStation Blog's rundown of the story trailer is the clearest official look at those threats so far, and more mission details are expected to surface as early access players share their first hours in the cockpit before the wider launch.
