Crimson Desert's Charting the Unknown DLC Sends Kliff to Sea on October 15

Pearl Abyss revealed Charting the Unknown, Crimson Desert's first DLC, adding sailing, underwater diving and a housing overhaul ahead of October 15.

Pearl Abyss used Sony's September State of Play to surprise-reveal Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown, the open-world action game's first paid expansion. The reveal trailer sent hero Kliff out to open water for the first time, and the studio has since locked in a release date, a price and a list of pre-order bonuses.

Charting the Unknown launches October 15 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store, seven months after Crimson Desert's initial launch. It arrives as a $24.99 digital add-on rather than a full-priced sequel, and Pearl Abyss is positioning it as the start of a longer post-launch story arc for Pywel rather than a one-off cosmetic pack.

A Surprise Reveal, Not a Long Tease

Unlike Crimson Desert's own multi-year run-up to launch, Charting the Unknown had almost no lead time. Pearl Abyss gave no prior hint that a DLC reveal was coming to State of Play, and the announcement landed alongside release-date news for several other PS5 exclusives rather than as its own dedicated showcase moment. That timing matters for a studio whose base game shipped to a mixed critical reception in March: a fast follow-up, rather than a slow marketing campaign, suggests Pearl Abyss wants to show post-launch support quickly instead of waiting to see how sentiment settled.

Command Your Own Ship

The headline addition is naval traversal. Players take the wheel of a personal vessel and sail beyond Pywel's familiar coastline toward a string of previously uncharted islands. Pearl Abyss has framed the ship less as fast travel and more as a hub for the expansion's new activities, with its own upgrades and crew considerations layered on top of Crimson Desert's existing horse-and-foot exploration loop.

What Lies Beneath the Waves

A diving suit lets Kliff descend into underwater zones for the first time, hunting submerged treasure, sunken ruins and what the developer calls hidden mysteries scattered across the seabed. Early footage also showed considerably larger threats down there, including an armored crab-like enemy and a serpentine foe that chases Kliff out of a flooded ruin, suggesting the underwater sections are built around set-piece encounters rather than passive sightseeing.

An Overhauled Home on the Coast

Charting the Unknown also expands Crimson Desert's housing system well past its current decorating options. The update adds deeper customization tools for building and furnishing a home, plus the ability to rent and manage additional facilities, giving the base-building side of the game its own light economic loop alongside combat and exploration.

New Threats and Three Intertwined Stories

Narratively, the DLC picks up after Crimson Desert's main campaign and splits its new content across four threads: an ominous presence surfacing in the desert, a political conflict brewing in Pywel's cities, what Pearl Abyss describes only as a journey beyond time, and an ancient secret waiting beneath the ocean. Kliff, Oongka and Damiane each get material tied to these threads, continuing storylines the base game left open rather than starting a self-contained side story.

On the combat side, Pearl Abyss says new enemies appear across both land and sea, pushing players toward some of the demanding fights in the game so far. Nothing shown so far suggests a change to Crimson Desert's core combat system itself; the expansion instead leans on new enemy types and underwater positioning to keep encounters from feeling like reskinned versions of the main campaign.

Release Date and Pre-Order Bonuses

Charting the Unknown is scheduled to go live worldwide on October 15 at 10 PM UTC. Pre-orders are already open on every platform the DLC is releasing for, and early buyers receive two cosmetic sets at launch: the Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka, and the Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane. Full details, platform links and pricing by region are listed on the official Crimson Desert DLC announcement.

Crimson Desert launched in March to strong commercial numbers but a mixed critical reception, and Charting the Unknown reads as Pearl Abyss's first real test of whether it can broaden the game's appeal after the fact rather than simply patch it. Sailing and underwater exploration are new systems rather than tweaks, and a housing update aimed at a wider, more casual audience is an unusual pivot for a game built around large-scale combat. Whether the expansion changes how the game is remembered will depend on execution more than scope, but Pearl Abyss has at least picked a distinct enough direction to find out.
