Stranger Than Heaven's London Hands-On Reveals Its Four-Limb Combat System

A three-hour hands-on with SEGA's Stranger Than Heaven reveals its four-limb combat system, a new showman business mini-game, and confirms its January 15, 2027 launch.

SEGA invited press to a London bar on October 21 for a three-hour hands-on session with STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, RGG Studio's fifty-year gangster saga from the team behind the Like a Dragon series. Attendees played an in-progress build spanning three separate chapters from the opening hours, the first extended public look at the game since its Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo booth in September. SEGA confirmed in June that the full game launches January 15, 2027.

The demo opened with protagonist Makoto Daito, a dual-heritage Japanese American fleeing San Francisco, stowing away on a boat belonging to Orpheus, a dockside fixer voiced by Snoop Dogg. From there the build jumped forward to Daito working for Orpheus and falling in with a yakuza family in Taisho-era Japan, where a seduction job goes wrong and spirals into gang warfare at an ironworks. The session ended at a boss fight that proved tough enough that not every attendee finished it in the time allotted.

The hands-on follows months of SEGA steadily widening the spotlight on the game, from a March Xbox Partner Preview gameplay segment through a dedicated Xbox Presents broadcast in May and a Summer Game Fest trailer in June that formally introduced Snoop Dogg's role and the rest of the new cast. Tokyo Game Show in September added a playable demo booth and a "Walkthrough Museum" covering the game's five cities and eras, making London the most hands-on press has been allowed with the combat system itself.

Four Limbs, One Brawler

RGG Studio built a new combat system for Daito that assigns each of his four limbs to a separate bumper or trigger, letting players mix punches, kicks and grabs on the fly rather than cycling between fixed combo strings. Blocking and parrying are mapped to a single button, and enemies stagger after enough clean hits land, opening them up for a two-trigger execution move. Weapons ranging from katanas to sledgehammers, knives and axes can be pulled out on command, though the build showed no sign of dual-wielding or elemental effects. The studio has described the system as an evolution of the free-flowing brawling the team built its reputation on, and the hands-on build bore that out: it takes longer to learn than a typical Like a Dragon fight, but rewards players who juggle all four inputs instead of mashing one.

Gambling Dens, Fight Clubs and the Showman Business

Each of the game's five eras unlocks its own slice of open world, continuing the series' habit of filling side streets with diversions rather than leaving them empty. The preview build offered underground fight clubs, arm wrestling and gambling tables alongside a new showman business mini-game, in which players compose original songs out of sounds sourced from the world, then rent out venues, book performers, set lighting and effects, and price tickets before hitting timed prompts during the live show itself. It's a bigger production-management loop than the side hustles RGG Studio has shipped before, and SEGA is clearly betting on it: Tokyo Game Show's theater zone was built around previewing the game's original music.

A Cast Built Around Snoop Dogg, and a Posthumous Tupac

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN's starriest swing is still its casting. Snoop Dogg voices and performs as Orpheus, while a likeness of Tupac Shakur, created with the backing of his estate, appears as a character named Amaru. SEGA says the game passed one million wishlists more than four months before launch, its most-wishlisted release ever, and the studio has leaned into the attention the casting generates rather than away from it.

Masayoshi Yokoyama, director at RGG Studio, has pushed back on the idea that the celebrity casting is a stunt. "I want people to focus on the gameplay and the narrative experience itself," he said in June, addressing criticism of the Tupac casting directly rather than deflecting it.

What's Left Before January 15

The build wasn't bug-free. One attendee found a texture glitch the developers said had already been patched in a newer internal version, and Yokoyama reportedly hadn't seen another bug the press encountered, though he expressed confidence it would be fixed well before launch. The bigger open question is structural: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN jumps between five decades and five cities, and it isn't yet clear from a three-hour slice how the time-hopping will hold the story together across a full campaign RGG Studio has said was originally planned as a trilogy before being folded into one release.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN launches January 15, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, and arrives day one on Xbox Game Pass. Pre-orders are open now across standard, deluxe and physical collector's editions.

SEGA's Tupac & Cast Reveal Trailer, shown at Summer Game Fest 2026, introduced the cast now playable in the October hands-on build.
